Junior Huskies Basketball Club 2004 Results
Stampede Shootout - Calgary, AB (July 8-10)
The Jr. Huskies Basketball Club particapated in the Stampede Shootout in Calgary, Alberta this weekend. The 19-and-under squad had a 5-0 record and brought home the championship with a 69-67 victory over the Red Deer Junior Kings. Andrew Spagrud led the Jr. Huskies with 29 points, and Levi Vann added 12. The Jr. Huskies exploded offensively in two of their four pool games, scoring 144 and 145 points.
The 17-and-under team finished up with a 3-1 record, but failed to advance to the final four based on points for and against. The Jr. Huskies won their first playoff pool game in overtime, 101-96, versus eventual tournament champion Calgary Team Magic before losing to the Calgary Jr. Dinos 89-73. Rejean Chabot had 38 points against the Magic, and Jamal Williams added 17. Williams had 15 against the Jr. Dinos, and Andrew Giesbrecht added 13.
The 16-and-under squad, playing up in the 17-and-under division, finished in 9th place out of 18 teams with a 2-2 record. The Jr. Huskies beat the Calgary Jr. Dinos U16 team before losing to the Team Manitoba U16 squad in their playoff pool games.
The 15-and-under team, shorthanded because of injuries, finished the weekend 1-3. They won their last game, 91-65 over the Saskatoon Thunder.
Great Canadian Shootout - Edmonton, AB (July 1-4)
The Saskatoon Junior Huskies Basketball Club had four teams playing in the Great Canadian Shootout in Edmonton, Alberta, this past weekend. The 19-and-under team went 4-0 before losing a nail-biter in the final at the buzzer, 83-81 to the Calgary Jr. Dinos. Jordan Harbidge led the Jr. Huskies with 32 points, and Mark Breker added 25.
The 17-and-under squad ended up 4-1 after beating the Calgary Jr. Dinos 99-86 to finish third in their division. Rejean Chabot had 31 points to lead the Jr. Huskies, while Jamal Williams added 20. Chabot averaged 27.8 points per game over the course of the tournament. Andrew Giesbrecht had 30 points in the Jr. Huskies semi-final loss to Calgary Team Magic. Williams scored a game-high 32 points in Saturday's final pool play game. Williams and Giesbrecht averaged 21.8 and 18.0 points per game respectively in the five weekend games.
The 16-and-under team beat the Morinville (AB) Wolves 90-50 to claim third place in their division. Zee Cilimdzic led the Jr. Huskies with 18 points. Daniel Brudehl had 24 points in the Jr. Huskies 80-75 semi-final loss to the Calgary Jr. Dinos.
The 15-and-under squad lost 78-60 to Alberta Zone 5 in the fifth place game. Lane Reid had 14 points for the Jr. Huskies. Reid paced the Jr. Huskies with 20 points in their 77-74 double-overtime victory over Alberta Zone 8 the night before.
Sheep River Shootout - Okotoks, AB (June 4,5)
It was a successful weekend for the Saskatoon Jr. Huskies Basketball Club. The Jr. Huskies had four teams playing in the Sheep River Shootout in Okotoks, Alberta. The 19-and-under squad won all three of their games to claim the championship, beating the Alberta Juvenile Provincial team 88-77 in the final. Andrew Spagrud led the Huskies with 35 points. Levi Vann scored 32 points, including eight three-pointers, for the Jr. Huskies' in their semi-final victory.
The 17-and-under squad won two games before losing to the Calgary Jr. Trojans, 87-84, in the championship final. The Jr. Huskies had a chance to tie the game at the buzzer but the three-point attempt rimmed out. Rejean Chabot had 32 points to lead the Jr. Huskies. Jamal Williams scored 19 points for the Jr. Huskies in their 68-63 semi-final victory over the Calgary Jr. Dinos.
The 16-and-under team won all three of their games and the tournament championship, beating the Calgary Jr. Dinos 75-69 in the final. Keegan Larson led the Jr. Huskie attack with 13 points, while Malcolm Peters added 12 points.
The 15-and-under team finished in fourth, losing to the Edmonton Red Storm 66-58 in the third place game of the eight-team bracket. Nolan Brudehl scored 20 points for the Jr. Huskies, who also got 16 from Jeremy Bowering.
