Huskies ranked No. 7 in nation in final poll
Saskatoon, SK - The University of Saskatchewan Huskies are ranked No. 7 in this week's Canadian Interuniversity Sport top ten rankings, the final rankings of the season before the Final 10. The Huskies were No. 9 in last week's National Association of Basketball Coaches of Canada (NABCC) poll on February 28, 2006.
The No. 7 ranking is the highest of the season for the Huskies, who lost by one point at then-No.2 UBC in the conference semi-final before defeating then-No. 8 Regina 77-69 in the third place game at Vancouver. Saskatchewan earned a berth in the Final 10 National Championships which will be held in Halifax, March 16-19. Seedings for the national tournament will be announced on Sunday night.
Victoria, which beat UBC to win the Canada West championship, is the country's new No. 1 team. This is the first time Victoria has been ranked No. 1 since the week of February 4, 1997. Carleton, last week's top ranked team, fell to No. 3 after losing to York in the OUA East final.
Five schools received first place votes this week, in the closest vote for the top spot in at least seven years. NABCC Top Ten - March 7, 2006 Rk School Points (Overall, Conf) LW 1.
