Huskiehoops.com Shootout begins Thursday

Saskatoon, SK - The University of Saskatchewan Huskies will be hosting the 2005 Huskiehoops.com Shootout beginning this Thursday night, October 20th. The tournament continues through Saturday night, October 22nd. This year's Shootout could be the best ever in the seven-year history of the event, as this year's field is loaded with four top ten caliber teams. All three visiting teams were also participants in the Final 10 in Halifax last March.

The University of Alberta, Concordia University and the University of Victoria will provide the opposition for the home squad. Concordia and Alberta will tip-off the tournament at 6:00 pm Thursday evening. The Huskies will take on Victoria in their home opener following that game at 8:00 pm. Game times will remain the same for both Friday and Saturday, with the Huskies taking the court in the late game each night.

Saskatchewan enters this year's Huskiehoops.com Shootout looking to add another tournament title to their collection. The Huskies won last year's tournament as they defeated Windsor, Montana State-Northern and Montana Tech. Victoria will be making it's third appearance in the Shootout. The Vikes won the title in 2001 (2-1), and finished third in 2003 (1-2). This will be Concordia's second time at the Shootout. The Stingers finished in second place in 2000 (2-1). The Alberta Golden Bears, Central Division rivals with the Huskies, will be making their first appearance in the Shootout.

The Huskies (5-2) five game winning streak was snapped by Lakehead last Saturday afternoon as they finished with two wins and one loss at the Super 8 Tournament in Brandon, Manitoba. Kyle Grant was named to the All-Tournament team. The Dogs have been without the services of six players, including three starters from last year, at various times this season due to injury. Andrew Spagrud and Kevin Hollman are expected to return to the lineup Thursday night, while Matt Greenberg and Sam Lamontagne are both doubtful. Head coach Greg Jockims is in his eighth season with Saskatchewan, which posted a 25-13 overall record last season when they won the Central Division regular season title.

Victoria (2-0) is coming off of two wins against Lethbridge in non-conference action last weekend on the coast. Fifth-year senior Chris Trumpy, a First Team All-Conference selection a year ago, leads the Vikes in scoring (14.5), assists (5.0) and steals (2.5) per game. Vikes head coach Craig Beaucamp, in his third year with the Vikes, is a graduate of the University of Saskatchewan, and coached at Melfort Collegiate for nine years (1992-2001). Beaucamp has been chosen as the Canada West coach of the year the past two seasons, and the Vikes were conference finalists last season. The Huskies defeated the Vikes in their only meeting last year, 78-72 at Saskatoon.

Alberta (3-3), which won the 2004-05 Canada West championship, was in the nation's capital last weekend for the House-Laughton Invitational at Carleton. After defeating Western Ontario by two, the Bears lost to Bishop's (79-66) and the host Ravens (89-73). The Bears are led by fifth-year senior forward Phil Sudol, who was a second team all-conference pick last season after coming off of knee surgery. Fourth-year senior Scott Gordon, a 6-foot-7 forward, leads the team in scoring with 15.0 points per game. Head coach Don Horwood, in his 23rd season at Alberta, reached a milestone last year when he collected his 500th career victory in the conference semi-final against Brandon.

Concordia (3-2) finished second in the nation last year, losing to Carleton in the national final. Last weekend the Stingers were in St. John's for the Hawk 'Eyes Invitational. After losing to Laurier and Ottawa, a team that they beat a week earlier at their own tournament in Montreal, the Stingers got back on track by beating the host Memorial University 84-58. Fourth-year forward Patrick Perrotte scored 19 points against the Seahawks, while newcomer Damien Buckley had 14 points and 12 rebounds. Head coach John Dore is in his 17th year at Concordia, and has led them to the national championships nine times. The Huskies met the Stingers at the Golden Bear Invitational in Edmonton last October, pulling off a 98-96 victory as they won the tournament title.

Huskiehoops.com will have all the results and statistics, including tournament leaders, from the Shootout updated each night after play is completed.
