Vikes, Bears victorious on day one
Saskatoon, SK - Alberta and Victoria came away with victories on Thursday night at the Huskiehoops.com Shootout. The Alberta Golden Bears held off Concordia Stingers 94-86, while Victoria beat the host Saskatchewan Huskies 69-57 in the late game.
Victoria (3-0) will take on Concordia (3-3) at 6:00 pm Friday at the Physical Activity Complex. Following that contest Alberta (4-3) and Saskatchewan (5-3) will renew their rivalry at 8:00 pm.
Alberta 94 vs. Concordia 86
The Bears and Stingers battled back and forth during a tight first half that featured nie lead changes and four ties. Forward Richard Bates held the hot hand for Alberta, going 8-12 from the floor and scoring 21 points before the break. The Bears held a 45-41 advantage at the half.
Alberta extended it's lead to 11 with just under 15 minutes to play. But the Stingers would claw their way back to tie the game at 60 on a layup by Chris Blackwood with just over nine minutes to go. Dean Whalen got Alberta back on track, scoring 21 points in the frame, finishing with a game-high 32 to help the Bears secure the victory.
Whalen was 10-17 from the field and a perfect 8-8 from the free throw line. Bates finished with 23 points and a game-high 10 rebounds.
Patrick Perrotte led four Stingers in double-figures with 20 points, and was 8-11 from the floor. Damien Buckley added 17 points and six steals, and was 11-12 from the charity stripe. Jamal Gallier had a team-high nine rebounds.
Both Alberta (54.4%) and Concordia (51.8%) shot the ball well from the field. Alberta had 26 turnovers, while Concordia turned it over 21 times in the fast-paced game.
Victoria 69 at Saskatchewan 57
The Vikes got off to a quick start, taking an 8-0 lead to begin the game. Andrew Spagrud finally got the Huskies on the board with a jumper almost four minutes into the game. Senior Trent Folk gave the Huskies a 17-15 lead with 10:30 remaining on a nice move in the post. The score remained close the rest of the first half, and Victoria took a 32-30 lead at the break.
The Vikes would not relinquish the lead in the second half. The lead stayed between four and nine points the first fifteen minutes of the second period, until a dunk by freshman Jacob Doerksen gave the Vikes an 11-point lead with just over five minutes to play.
Spagrud finished with 13 points and seven rebounds for the Huskies. Rob Lovelace added 12 points, while Kevin Langdon had 11 points and a team-high eight boards. Levi Vann scored nine points, going 3-6 from beyond the arc.
Doerksen finished with a game-high 18 points, going 7-14 from the field. Tyler Hass had 14 points and 10 rebounds, while fifth-year senior Chris Trumpy scored 13 points and dished out 11 assists. Trumpy also had five steals.
Victoria shot 54.9% for the game from the floor, including 62.5% in the second half. The Huskies were only 43.6% from the field. The 57 points scored by the Huskies is their lowest output in almost two years. The Dogs scored 57 points at Biola (California) on January 1st, 2004.
