Vikes capture Huskiehoops.com Shootout
Saskatoon, SK - The University of Victoria Vikes continued their impressive play at the Huskiehoops.com Shootout Saturday night against the University of Alberta Golden Bears. Victoria hammered Alberta in the first half, shooting an unheard of 72.0% from the field on their way to a 48-32 lead at the break. The Vikes (5-0) would go on to win 74-59, capturing the championship at the 2005 Huskiehoops.com Shootout with their perfect 3-0 record.
In Saturday's late game, the University of Saskatchewan Huskies and Concordia University Stingers staged a shootout of their own. Saskatchewan's inability to stop Concordia's transition and penetration was the difference in the game though. Concordia shot 62.7% from the floor for the game, earning a 100-88 victory over the hosts to close out the tournament.
Concordia (4-4), Alberta (4-5) and Saskatchewan (6-4) all finished with 1-2 records in the tournament. By virtue of points for and against, Concordia finished in second place, followed by Alberta and then Saskatchewan.

Victoria's torrid shooting helped them blow the game wide open. Freshman Jacob Doerksen scored 18 first half points to lead the way, as the Vikes hit 18 of 25 field goal attempts in the period. The Vikes continued to shoot well to begin the second half, and led 69-39 with 11:44 to play in the game. They would only score five more points the rest of the game, but cruised to the 74-59 victory.
Tournament Most Valuable Player Chris Trumpy had 17 points, five rebounds, six assists and another four steals to led the Vikes to the title. He was 6-8 from the field, including 4-5 from three-point range. Doerksen finished with 22 points, going 8-9 from the floor. He was also 4-5 from beyond the arc, and the Vikes hit 11 of 18 three-point attempts for the game.
Trumpy averaged 17.0 points, 3.3 boards, 6.7 assists and 4.3 steals per game over the course of the tournament. He also shot 62.5% from the field (20-32) and was 50.0% (7-14) from three-point range.

Doerksen and Whalen were both named to the All-Tournament team.

Both teams seemed to be able to score at will to open the contest. With 15:01 to play, a Kyle Grant three-pointer gave the Huskies an 18-17 lead. The game continued to be close, when Chris Blackwood nailed a three to give the Stingers the lead for good, putting Concordia up 41-38 with 5:43 to go in the half. The Stingers would lead 55-49 at the break.
Concordia shot 58.8% in the first half from the floor, while the Huskies weren't far behind at 57.1%. Junior Andrew Spagrud had 21 first half points for the Huskies, and was 9-11 from the free throw line in the period.
The Stingers lead most of the second half by six to eight points. A three-pointer by Jordan Harbidge cut the lead to five with 11:43 to go. But the Huskies couldn't cut into the lead any further. Patrick Perrotte kept getting layups and hitting 12-foot jumpers to keep Concordia ahead, scoring 20 points in the frame to secure the victory for the Stingers.
Spagrud finished with a tournament single-game record of 33 points. That total eclipsed the mark of 32, which was shared by three players, including Alberta's Dean Whalen who scored 32 against Concordia on Thursday night. Spagrud was 12-20 from the floor, and also had a game-high 10 rebounds. Kevin Langdon continued to shoot the ball well for the Dogs, going 11-16 from the floor, finishing with 24 points.
Perrotte finished with 28 points, leading six Stingers in double-figures. He was 13-16 from the field in only 22 minutes of action. Perrotte set a new tournament record with 67 total points in three games, beating the old mark of 65 set by former Huskie James Kenyon in 2002.
Freshman Damien Buckley added 21 points and six assists for the Stingers. Blackwood contributed 12 points and eight assists. Rastko Popovic, Andre Johnny and Ben McCarthy had 10 points apiece.
