Second half surge lifts Huskies over 'Horns
Saskatoon, Sask. - The University of Saskatchewan Huskies took advantage of a 9-0 run midway through the second half to pull away from the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns. Saskatchewan was up 77-65 with just over eight minutes remaining after the decisive run, and went on to a 96-83 victory Friday night at the Physical Activity Complex.
Andrew Spagrud led Saskatchewan (12-13, 7-4 Canada West) with 41 points, tying his career-high, as they moved to four games up on Lethbridge (8-17, 3-8) in the Central Division standings.
Both teams got off to a slow start in the first few minutes to open the game. But Spagrud got the Huskies going, scoring all 22 of his first half points in the first 12 minutes. Then the Huskies went on a 10-0 run, capped by a Kyle Grant three-pointer off an assist from Kalem Edlund, in just under a minute to go up 41-28 with 4:17 to play. Lethbridge would come back to cut the lead to 45-41 at the break, as Scott Mackinnon scored the final seven points of the frame for Lethbridge.
After Saskatchewan went up nine in the early minutes of the second half, Lethbridge came back and took a 58-57 lead on a Gilbert Madsen jumper with 12:38 to go. Grant would score the next five points though to put the Huskies back on top for good.
The Pronghorns cut the lead to three with just over nine minutes to play when the Huskies would make their move. Jordan Harbidge hit a three and on the next possesion Edlund nailed another shot from beyond the arc. The next time down the court Spagrud converted a three-point play at the free throw line to push the lead to twelve.
Matt Bekkering answered with a three of his own for the 'Horns, but a tip-in by Rejean Chabot for the Huskies helped keep the lead in double-digits. An alley-oop pass from Harbidge to Spagrud for the powerful dunk, putting the Huskies up 90-76 with 3:32 to play, put the exclamation point on the victory.
Spagrud's 41 points is the fourth highest total in Huskie history, tying the mark he set as a freshman. He was 15-18 from the floor, including 2-2 from downtown, and also grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds. Grant added 17 points and four steals. Chabot scored 13 points and dished out three assists. Harbidge finished with 10 points and four assists. Clint Unsworth had six points while Edlund had five off the bench.
Mackinnon led five Pronghorns in double-figures with 21 points, and was 8-9 from the free throw line. Ryan Anderson had 13 points, while Bruce Carbert had 12 going 6-6 from the field.
