'Horns pull away in final minute for win

Saskatoon, Sask. - The University of Lethbridge Pronghorns pulled away from the University of Saskatchewan Huskies in the final minute to earn a 78-70 victory Saturday night at the Physical Activity Complex.

Freshman Tim McMurray hit a three-pointer with 1:31 remaining in the game to put Lethbridge up 71-66. From there Lethbridge hit seven of eight free throws to secure the victory.

Saskatchewan (12-14, 7-5 Canada West) remains one game behind Alberta for first place in the Central Division, while Lethbridge (8-17, 4-8) is still tied with Calgary for third spot.

The game was an ugly one the majority of the night, with neither team able to establish anything consistent on offense and the pace slowed by 45 foul calls, 27 of which came in the first half. The Pronghorns took a 39-37 lead into the locker room at the break after the Huskies led by 10 with eight minutes remaining in the period.

Lethbridge led for all but twenty seconds of the second half before David Neufeld drilled a three from the top of the key to give Saskatchewan a 61-58 lead with 8:38 to play. But McMurray responded with a three of his own a minute later to tie the game. A jumper by Jordan Harbidge with 3:29 to go put Saskatchewan up 66-65. Scott Mackinnon's jumper put Lethbridge up two before McMurray's three pushed the lead to five.

Rejean Chabot scored a game-high 17 points to lead the Huskies. Andrew Spagrud scored 13 points and grabbed a game-high nine rebounds. Kyle Grant, 12, and Harbidge, 10, were the only other Huskies to score in double-figures.

Mackinnon paced the Pronghorns with 16 points and six rebounds. Matthew Bekkering scored 15 points and also grabbed six boards. Bruce Carbert had 13 points, while McMurray finished with 11 points on 4-4 shooting from the field.

The Huskies shot 44.7% from the floor, while the Pronghorns shot 44.1%. The 'Horns scored 31 points off of 26 Huskie turnovers. The Huskies managed to score 17 points off of 23 'Horns tunrovers.

The Pronghorns won the battle on the boards 37-30. The 'Horns were 21-29 from the free throw line, while the Huskies were 24-36.

Saskatchewan will host Manitoba on Friday night before playing Winnipeg on Saturday night. Tip-off for both games is scheduled for 8:00 pm at the Physical Activity Complex.
