Huskies shoot lights out against Bisons Saskatchewan sets school record with 16 three-pointers
Saskatoon, Sask. - It was a frigid evening outside, but inside the Physical Activity Complex Friday the University of Saskatchewan Huskies were red hot. Saskatchewan hit 16 three-pointers, a new school record, dominating the Manitoba Bisons along the way to a 98-73 victory.
With the victory Saskatchewan remains one game behind Alberta for first place in the Central Division standings.
The Huskies hit eight of their first nine attempts from downtown, and were 11-14 from beyond the arc in the first half. Kyle Grant helped get the Huskies started by hitting a three, then stealing the ensuing inbounds pass and calmly drilling another three from the top of the key. Rejean Chabot followed with another three as the Huskies started the game on an 18-6 run in the first 2:48 of play.
Saskatchewan outscored the Bisons 25-8 over the final eight minutes of the half to extend their lead to 61-31 at the break.
The Huskies began the second half with a 21-9 run. Freshman David Neufeld hit the Huskies 15th three with 14:25 remaining, to break the previous school record for three-point field-goals in a game. The Huskies pushed their lead to 90-46 with 9:12 to go, their biggest lead of the night. The Bisons would outscore the Huskies 27-8 over the final eight minutes to bring the final margin to 25 points.
Senior point guard Jordan Harbidge made all five of his attempts beyond the arc, scoring a career-high 20 points for the Huskies. Harbidge also had four assists and zero turnovers. Andrew Spagrud scored 26 points in 22 minutes of action. He was 9-13 from the floor, including 2-3 from beyond the arc. He also had five boards and four assists.
Chabot finished with 11 points, five rebounds and six assists. Grant had eight points and six assists. Both Chabot and Grant were 2-2 from downtown. Neufeld scored 10 points, while Dan Brudehl had nine points off the bench. Clint Unsworth also had five boards. The Huskies had seven different players make at least two three-pointers each.
Isaac Ansah, the nation's sixth leading scorer entering the game, was held to 13 points on 3-13 shooting. Freshman Eric Garcia came off the bench to score 13 points in the final 11 minutes of the game, going 5-5 from the field. Darcy Coss was the only other Bison in double-figures with 12 points. Myron Dean grabbed a game-high seven rebounds.
Saskatchewan shot 62.3% from the floor for the game, and were 69.6% from downtown (16-23). The Bisons shot 40.7% from the field, and were 7-21 from three-point range. The Huskies were also an impressive 16-19 from the free throw line, while the Bisons were 18-25. The Huskies outrebounded the Bisons 33-26.
Saskatchewan will host Winnipeg (12-10, 5-8) on Saturday night. Tip-off is scheduled for 8:00 pm at the Physical Activity Complex.
Notes: The previous record of 14 three-pointers made in a game was set three times. On October 27, 1990 vs. Brandon in Saskatoon, October 24, 2002 also against Brandon in Saskatoon and most recently October 16, 2004 vs. Queen's in St. John's, Newfoundland.
