Basketball Saskatchewan Inc. Press Release
Regina, Sask. - Basketball Saskatchewan announced today Nathan Schellenberg, a graduate of Luther College High School in Regina and an assistant coach with the University of Saskatchewan Huskies since 2002, has been hired by the provincial sports organization.
"Nathan’s primary job is to prepare our boys and girls to compete at the 2009 Canada Summer Games," said Mark Benesh, Vice-President of Coaching Development for Basketball Saskatchewan and the Principal at Shaunavon High
School. "We’re very excited to have Nathan join Basketball Saskatchewan and share his enthusiasm for the game throughout the province."
Schellenberg will be based in Saskatoon and work full-time for Basketball Saskatchewan until the 2009 Canada Games are completed. Boys and girls who participate in the Basketball Saskatchewan midget age group this year will be age-eligible for the 2009 Canada Games. Midgets are usually in grades eight and nine.
Funding for the Canada Games Saskatchewan Coach Employment Program is provided by the 2005 Canada Summer Games Building Dreams & Champions Legacy Fund, the Saskatchewan Lotteries Trust Fund and Basketball Saskatchewan Inc.
Schellenberg brings considerable coaching and playing experience to the position. In addition to coaching at the university level Nathan also operated basketball camps and compiled an impressive 65-22 overall record as the head coach of the 17 & Under Junior Huskies Club team.
With the university Huskies he has primarily worked with the forwards and helped them reach the national championships in 2005-06 for the first time in 18 years.
He has been a guest coach at numerous clinics throughout Saskatchewan and spent a week coaching at the University of Missouri basketball camp in 2003.
In the summer of 2004 he guided the Junior Huskies club team to a fifth place finish in their division at the Reebok Big Time Tournament in Las Vegas, the best placing ever by a Canadian team.
Schellenberg played his high school basketball at Luther in Regina. He played three years on the senior team, winning three West Division titles. The Luther Lions were crowned Regina city champions in 1992 and finished second in the Provincial Championships. In 1993 they were city finalists.
As a senior he was named a Luther team captain and MVP, when he averaged a team-high 20.6 points per game along with 7.0 rebounds per game and 6.8 assists per game. Schellenberg was an RIBL West Division All-Star as a senior.
He began his coaching career at Ruth Pawson Elementary School in Regina and then coached the junior boys at Luther for three years prior to rejoining the University of Saskatchewan Huskies where he had played basketball for one year.
Nathan was a starter on the Basketball Saskatchewan Juvenile team in 1993 and has coached in the Basketball Saskatchewan spring program for four years.
He also was a member of the 1996 National Champion University of Saskatchewan Huskies football
team.
