Dogs, Dinos split as they head into playoffs

Unsworth's career-high helps Huskies defeat Dinos

Calgary, Alberta - The University of Saskatchewan Huskies and University of Calgary Dinos closed out the regular season with a pair of games in Calgary this past weekend. The teams split their two meetings, with Calgary winning 75-60 on Friday night and Saskatchewan claiming a 79-70 victory Saturday night.

With Calgary's victory on Friday, Saturday's game was rendered meaningless in terms of the standings, as Saskatchewan had already clinched second place in the Central Division. But it was an important game from a preparation standpoint. Saskatchewan (18-18, 13-9 Canada West) will host Calgary (17-19, 11-11) in the best-of-three Central Division Semi-Final beginning this Friday evening.

Friday the Huskies played a strong first half, but were unable to score or get a break during a physical second half. Saturday night the Huskies once again had a strong first half, but this time were able to close out the Dinos down the stretch.

Senior guard Josh Feist scored 18 points, added eight assists and three steals as the University of Calgary Dinos defeated the University of Saskatchewan Huskies 75-60 in Canada West men’s basketball action Friday evening.

The triumph for the Dinos was their fifth in a row and eighth in their last ten conference games. The two teams conclude their regular season Saturday evening.

Saskatchewan led 34-30 at the end of the first half thanks to a dozen points from sophomore Rejean Chabot who led the Huskies in scoring with 15 points, finishing the game with 21 points.

With the Dinos leading 26-22 with 8:02 to play the Huskies held the Dinos scoreless for 6:20, using a 12-0 run to take an eight point lead on an Andrew Spagrud layup off a feed from Chabot.

Spagrud became the Saskatchewan's all-time leading scorer in conference games just over three minutes into the game with a short jump shot passing Roger Ganes.

The teams were tied 42-42 with 14:30 remaining but Calgary went on 12-3 run in the next four minutes to lead 54-45 with 9:45 remaining.

Calgary stretched their margin to 62-50 with seven minutes remaining and never allowed the Huskies to cut the margin to less than nine points.

The Huskies were forced to play the final 5:17 minus Spagrud who fouled out leaving the game with 17 points and six rebounds.

Calgary used their depth on the boards hauling down 42 rebounds as compared to 35 for Saskatchewan but was also aided by 24 turnovers while Calgary had 17.

Sophomore Ross Bekkering tallied 17 points for Calgary and hauled down nine rebounds while senior Sonny Khangura added a dozen points and seven rebounds.

The University of Saskatchewan Huskies gained a weekend split with the University of Calgary Dinos with a 79-70 win Saturday evening. With the win, Saskatchewan snaps a five game Calgary winning streak.

The two clubs will meet in best-of-three Central Division Semi-Final next weekend in Saskatoon.

Saskatchewan held a narrow 36-35 halftime margin thanks to 11 points from guard Kyle Grant that saw the Huskies lead much of the opening 20 minutes. Trailing 11-9 with 13:00 to play, Saskatchewan went on a 15-3 run over the next five and a half minutes to open the game up.

The Huskies stretched their margin to double digits with just under 13 minutes remaining in the game leading 51-41. A dunk during that run by sophomore Clint Unsworth off an assist from Matt Anderson helped excite the Huskies.

Calgary cut the lead to five points to 55-50 with just over ten minutes remaining, but Andrew Spagrud's left-handed finish as he was fouled led to a converted an three-point play, putting the visitors up 60-50 with 9:08 to go.

Saskatchewan took and led 72-63 after Kalem Edlund's layup in traffic with 3:50 left on the clock. A pair of quick baskets by the Dinos cut the margin to 72-66 with two and half minutes left but that was as close as Calgary would come.

Spagrud paced the Huskies with 19 points and 10 rebounds for his 21st double-double, while Rejean Chabot chipped in with 17 points and Grant added 15. Unsworth finished with a career-high 10 points off the bench, and also grabbed seven boards. Edlund tied his career-high with eight points.

Calgary was paced by Sonny Khangura who finished with a dozen points, with Cody Darrah adding 11.

The Dinos played the game minus senior point Josh Feist who was absent due to family reasons and lost swing man Jeremy Odland midway through the second half with an undetermined facial injury.
