Spagrud named First Team All-Canadian
Saskatoon, SK - Andrew Spagrud of the University of Saskatchewan Huskies was named First Team All-Canadian today as Canadian Interuniversity Sport announced it's men's basketball awards for the 2006-07 season. Spagrud is only the second Huskie to earn All-Canadian honours three times. Byron Tokarchuk was a four-time All-Canadian during his legendary career.
Spagrud became the first Huskie ever to lead the nation in scoring, averaging 23.5 points per game in conference play. He also led the conference in rebounding, finishing second in the country with 10.6 boards per game. He became just the seventh player ever to lead Canada West in scoring and rebounding in the same season.
"Andrew had an outstanding season," said Huskie head coach Greg Jockims. "He has really improved his game over the past year, especially his outside shooting, which has made him into a true inside/outside threat and created matchup problems for most of the teams we've played. He faces double and sometimes triple-teams every night, yet he has consistently been dominant at both ends of the floor. His hard work and preparation in the summer really helped him take his game to a whole new level this year."
Spagrud also finished fifth in Canada West, and sixth in the nation, in field goal percentage (.611). He also ranked eighth in the league, and 18th in the country in steals with 2.1 per game.
An engineering major from Saskatoon, Spagrud also led the nation in double-doubles with 25 overall (16 in conference play) and defensive rebounds (7.95 per game).
Spagrud played his best basketball during the playoffs though. He once again led the nation and conference in scoring (26.4 ppg), cracking the 30-point mark four times in seven postseason games. He also led the conference in rebounding (9.1 rpg), and was third in FG% (.673) and fifth in steals (2.7 spg).
He recently became only the second Huskie ever to score 3000 career points. He reached the milestone in his 150th game on March 2nd in the conference semi-final against UBC. Tokarchuk holds the school career scoring record with 3445 points in 171 career games from 1983-88. He reached 3000 points in his 154th game.
He also broke 63 school game, season, career and postseason records this year, the most significant being a mark that had stood for almost 30 years. He became the Huskies all-time career scoring leader in conference games on February 9th at Calgary. He has now scored 1743 career points in 82 conference games, passing the legendary Roger Ganes (1707 pts - 98 GP from 1973-78).
This season he established school season records for points (952), rebounds (419), defensive rebounds (295), double-doubles (25), free throws made (263), free throws attempted (372) and blocked shots (40).
He also set school career records for scoring average (20.2), free throws made (771) and free throws attempted (1189).
Spagrud tied his career-high with 41 points on January 5th against Lethbridge, and cracked the 30-point mark seven times this season. He also tied a career-high with 18 rebounds against Victoria on February 2nd. In 43 games this season he led the Huskies in scoring 28 times and rebounding 38 times.
This is the third straight season that he has been named an All-Canadian. Last year as a junior he was on the Second Team, while as a sophomore in 2004-05 he was on the First Team. As a freshman he was the national Freshman of the Year.
