Grant leads Dogs to victory over Lakeland
Saskatoon, SK - Kyle Grant scored a career-high 31 points Saturday afternoon at St. Joseph High School to lead the University of Saskatchewan Huskies to a 105-53 non-conference victory over the Lakeland College Rustlers. The win is the first for Saskatchewan (1-3) this season, while Lakeland (0-1) dropped it's first game of the season.
The Huskies went on a 31-0 run over a 12 minute span in the first half, pushing their lead to 51-10 with 2:30 to play in the half. The Huskies led 55-13 at the break, shooting 52.3 percent (23-44) from the floor in the half.
Lakeland was able to find their shooting touch in the second half, but Saskatchewan's pressure was to much to overcome. Grant scored 17 points in the second half, and hit three of his four three-point field goals.
Grant, a senior guard from Moose Jaw, also reached a milestone becoming the 31st Huskie all-time to score over 1000 career points, reaching the mark on a layup off a steal early in the second half. He now has 1011 points in 106 career games.
Grant, who led all scorers in the game, also added six assists, four rebounds and five steals. Andrew Spagrud added 19 points and eight rebounds for the Huskies. Senior transfer Mark Lynch scored 13 points and grabbed eight boards, while freshman forward David Neufeld had 12 points and seven rebounds. Sophomore Clint Unsworth had a game-high nine rebounds. Jordan Harbidge had a game-high seven assists and also had four steals.
Tim Rossy had 14 points to lead Lakeland, hitting three shots from downtown in the second half. Ossie Hinds addd 12 points.
Saskatchewan shot 51.2 percent (42-82) from the floor for the game, and was 8-23 from beyond the arc. Saskatchewan struggled from the free throw line, shooting only 13-28. As a team the Huskies had 19 assists, 20 steals and 13 turnovers.
The Huskies next game is at the Nike Invitational hosted by Concordia University in Monreal. The Huskies open the tournament with on Friday evening against New York Tech, an NCAA Division II school. Tip-off is scheduled for 8:00 pm (EST).
