Dinos, Bobcats win Shootout openers

Saskatoon, SK - The Calgary Dinos and Brandon Bobcats opened up the 2006 Huskiehoops.com Shootout with victories Thursday night at the Physical Activity Complex. Calgary defeated the Regina Cougars 82-61 in the tournament's opening game, while Brandon beat the host Saskatchewan Huskies in the late game 80-72.

Friday night will see the four Canada West Conference schools featured in two divisional matchups. Brandon (5-0) will face Great Plains Division rival Regina (3-1) in a 5:30 PM tip-off, followed by Central Division foes Calgary (2-4) against Saskatchewan (3-7) at 7:15 PM.

Calgary 82 vs. Regina 61

Calgary never trailed in a sloppy game in which both teams combined for 58 turnovers. Calgary shot 65.2% from the floor in the second half to pull away, leading by as much as 28 points at one point. Calgary led 36-23 at halftime.

The Cougars could not overcome their 32 turnovers, and shot only 41.0% from the floor for the game. The Dinos were able to hit 11 of their 20 three-point attempts, and shot 49.1% from the field for the game thanks to their hot shooting in the second frame.

Cody Darrah led five Dinos in double-figures with a game-high 19 points. Josh Fiest had 14 points and five assists, while sophomore Robbie Sihota added 13 points. Brian Finniss and Joseph Schow had 12 points each. Ross Bekkering led the Dinos with six rebounds and three blocked shots.

Regina was led by Jamal Williams who scored 12 points and grabbed a game-high nine boards. Jeff Lukomski was the only other Cougar in double-figures, scoring 11 points.

Brandon 80 at Saskatchewan 72

The turnover theme continued in the second game of the night, as Brandon and Saskatchewan had 22 and 21 turnovers respectively. That proved to be Saskatchewan's undoing, as the Huskies threw the ball away to many times to try to cut into the Bobcats lead in the last ten minutes of the game. The Bobcats pushed a two point lead with 11:35 to go into a ten point margin with 6:42 remaining, and the Huskies could not get closer than six points the rest of the way. Brandon held a slim 41-39 lead at the break.

Brandon shot .59.3% from the field in the second half, and 55.7% for the game. They also out-rebounded Saskatchewan 36-31, grabbing 14 offensive boards. Saskatchewan shot 57.7% from the floor in the second half, but finished the game shooting at 48.3%. Saskatchewan was only 4-23 from beyond the arc.

Yuri Whyms had 19 points and 12 rebounds to lead Brandon. Dany Charlery had 18 points on 8-13 shooting as well as five steals, while Yul Michel contributed 15 points and five assists.

Andrew Spagrud had a game-high 21 points for the Huskies, and also grabbed 12 rebounds. Kyle Grant, who helped the Huskies keep pace in the early going with three three-pointers in the first six minutes of the game, added 19 points and eight assists.

Prior to the game Grant was presented a plaque by former Huskie great Roger Ganes in recognition of scoring his 1000th career point on September 30th against Lakeland.
