Huskies defeat Dinos on day two of Shootout
Saskatoon, SK - The Saskatchewan Huskies bounced back from their opening game loss at the 2006 Huskiehoops.com Shootout with a 69-58 victory over the Calgary Dinos Friday night at the Physical Activity Complex. In the earlier game, the Brandon Bobcats remained undefeated as they beat the Regina Cougars 99-77.
Saturday night will see Brandon (6-0) trying to win the tournament championship when they face Calgary (2-5) in a 5:30 PM tip-off. The last game of the tournament will feature host Saskatchewan (4-7) against Regina (3-2) at 7:15 PM.
Brandon 99 vs. Regina 77
The first half was a close affair, as the two Great Plains Division rivals stayed within four points of each other for most of the half. Regina led by as much as seven with 5:44 to play, before Brandon came back to close the lead to 40-38 at the half.
The second half was all Bobcats though, as they exploded for 61 points in the frame, shooting an incredible 70.6% from the field including 9-12 from beyond the arc. The Bobcats had a huge advantage in points off of turnovers, outscoring the Cougars 24-2 in that department in the second half.
Brandon shot 64.4% from the floor for the game, and were 65.0% from downtown. The Cougars shot 50.9% from the floor, and were 52.6% from beyond the arc. The Cougars had 24 turnovers compared to the Bobcats 14.
Chad Jacobson finished with a game-high 30 points for the Bobcats. He was 11-15 from the field, including 6-7 from three-point territory. Taylor Cherris-Wilding hit four three-pointers of his own finishing with 16 points. Adam Hartman added 13 points and a team-high five rebounds.
Paul Schubach led the Cougars with 21 points on 7-11 shooting. Jeff Lukomski added 18 points off the bench, going 5-13 from downtown. Jamal Williams had nine points and a game-high six boards.
Calgary 58 at Saskatchewan 69
With the score 17-15 in favour of Saskatchewan with 9:00 remaining in the first half, the Huskies went on a 12-0 run to push their lead to 14 points with 5:50 to play. The run featured three-pointers by Kalem Edlund and Mark Lynch, and was capped by an Andrew Spagrud steal and dunk. Calgary would fight back as Brian Finniss scored seven straight points though, and holding Saskatchewan scoreless except for two free throws with 2.1 seconds left in the frame. Calgary trailed 31-26 at the half.
The Huskies kept up their defensive pressure in the second half, and led 67-47 with 4:17 to play after a tip-in by freshman Dan Brudehl. The Dinos would score the final eight points of the game to cut the final margin to 11.
The Huskies strong defense led to numerous fast break opportunities, and they outscored the Dinos 17-6 in transition for the game. The Dogs also had a 43-26 advantage in points in the paint.
Saskatchewan shot 48.3% from the floor for the game, while the Dinos were 45.8%. The Dinos struggled from the free throw line, going 9-18 while the Huskies were 8-9.
Kyle Grant had a game-high 18 points for the Huskies. He also added five rebounds, four steals and four assists. Spagrud had another double-double, finshing with 13 points and a game-high 11 rebounds. He also had five steals. Edlund and Jordan Harbidge had seven points each.
Robbie Sihota and Cody Darrah led the Dinos with 11 points apiece. Sophomore Ross Bekkering had 10 points, eight rebounds and four blocked shots.
