Saskatoon, SK - The University of Saskatchewan Huskies opened up Canada West Conference play Friday night with a convincing 101-59 victory over the University College of the Fraser Valley Cascades at the Physical Activity Complex. Saskatchewan (6-7, 1-0 CWC) will take on Thompson Rivers University (1-6, 0-3) Saturday night, while Fraser Valley (8-3, 2-1) will be in Edmonton to take on Alberta. Tip-off for Saturday night's game is scheduled for 8:00 pm.

The Huskies were led by All-Canadian forward Andrew Spagrud, who had game-highs of 39 points, 11 rebounds and five steals on the night. Spagrud was 14-16 shooting from the floor for the game.

After the opening minute and a half of play, Saskatchewan went on a 17-2 run over the next six minutes to take control of the game. Saskatchewan led 55-30 at the half, thanks to 60.0% shooting from the field and 22 UCFV turnovers. Spagrud had 25 points on 9-11 shooting in the first frame.

The Huskies would put the game away with a 15-4 run to begin the second half, and led by as much as 46 with just over three minutes to play. The Huskies also held the Cascades to only nine points in the final 10:20 of the game.

Huskies head coach Greg Jockims was pleased with his team's play. "We played our game. It’s important at this level," Jockims said. "If you want to be a good team, you have to have consistent plays. I thought we played very well, we did a decent job and stayed focused."

Spagrud almost eclipsed his career-high of 41 points (February 14 , 2004 at Calgary) which he set as a freshman. Senior guard Kyle Grant was the only other Huskie in double-figures with 15 points. Grant was 11-12 from the free throw line, had four steals and a game-high four assists including a hi-lite reel pass off the backboard to Spagrud for a dunk in the second half. Jordan Harbidge and freshman Dan Brudehl had nine points each.

Jamie Vaughan had eight points to lead Fraser Valley, which also got seven points apiece from Kyle Graves, Duane Wilson and Brian Lee. Josh Sharpe led the team with five boards.

Saskatchewan outrebounded Fraser Valley 38-25, and forced UCFV into 34 turnovers while commiting 20 themselves. Saskatchewan shot 57.9% from the field for the game, and 30-42 from the free throw line. Fraser Valley was 42.6% fro the floor for the game, and 9-12 from the charity stripe.
