Huskies pull away from TRU in second half

Saskatoon, SK - The University of Saskatchewan Huskies were able to overcome a sloppy start Saturday night to defeat the Thompson Rivers University WolfPack 90-70 at the Physical Activity Complex. Saskatchewan (7-7, 2-0 CWC) is tied for first place in the Central Division with Alberta, while Thompson Rivers (1-7, 0-4) is in last place in the Pacific Division.

The Huskies turned the ball over 14 times in the first half, and were cold from the field as they went 0-8 from three-point territory. TRU got some hot shooting from Brian Smith and Charlie Spurr, who had 14 and 12 points in the period respectively, to give them a slight lead for most of the half. Mark Lynch scored 15 points in the first half for the Huskies, going 9-10 at the line which helped the Dogs tie the score at 39 at the break.

The Huskies would take the lead for good on an Andrew Spagrud layup on their first possesion of the second half, but the WolfPack would not go away easily. The Huskies led by eight after freshman Dan Brudehl hit a layup with 14:22 to play, but the WolfPack would come back and cut the lead to 61-58 with 10:07 to go when Spurr hit a three.

But Saskatchewan would outscore TRU 29-12 in the final ten minutes of the game, pulling away thanks to nine TRU turnovers and some clutch shooting. Jordan Harbidge was 5-6 from downtown in the half, hitting three of those shots in the final eight minutes of the game. TRU also had no answer for seniors Spagrud and Kyle Grant, who combined for 28 second half points.

Spagrud had another monster game, scoring a game-high 27 points, grabbing 10 rebounds and dishing out four assists. Spagrud was 11-12 shooting from the field for the game. It was his second consecutive double-double performance, and he was shot and amazing 25-28 from the floor during the weekend. Grant and Harbidge had 18 points each. Grant also had five assists and five steals, while Harbidge had six assists. Lynch finished with 16 points.

Spurr led TRU with 26 points, going 10-16 from the field. Smith added 17 points and five rebounds, but also had seven turnovers.

The Huskies shot 73.1% from the floor in the second half, and finished the game shooting 63.3%. The WolfPack shot 51.9% for the game. The Huskies had 25 turnovers while the WolfPack had 30. The Huskies converted those turnovers into 42 points, a 17-point advantage in that category. The Huskies also outrebounded the WolfPack 30-21. The Huskies also had 22 assists on the night.

Saskatchewan will take on divisional rival Alberta (7-3, 2-0) next Friday and Saturday night in an early battle for first place in the Central Division. Tip-off is scheduled for 8:00 PM both nights at the Physical Activity Complex.
