Spagrud named CW Athlete of the Week

Saskatoon, SK - On Monday afternoon Andrew Spagrud was named the Canada West Male Athlete of the Week for the week ending November 5th. Spagrud helped lead the Saskatchewan Huskies to two victories in the opening weekend of conference play over Fraser Valley and Thompson Rivers.

Spagrud, a 6-foot-8 senior forward, had two double-double performances as he torched the two Pacific Division schools for 66 points while shooting a remarkable 25-28 (89.3%) from the floor.

Friday night in a 101-59 victory over Fraser Valley the two-time All-Canadian scored 39 points, grabbed 11 rebounds and had five steals in 25 minutes. He shot 14-16 from the floor, including 1-1 from beyond the arc, and was 10-15 from the free throw line.

In Saturday night's 90-70 win against Thompson Rivers Spagrud, an engineering student from Saskatoon, scored 27 points and collected 10 boards. He was 11-12 shooting from the floor and 5-9 from the charity stripe. He also dished out four assists and had two steals in 33 minutes of action.

Spagrud leads the conference in scoring and field goal percentage, and is ranked third in rebounding and second in steals.

It is the fifth time that Spagrud has been honoured as the conference male athlete of the week. He won the award twice as a freshman and twice as a sophomore.

Saskatchewan (7-7, 2-0 CWC) will take on divisional rival Alberta (8-3, 2-0) next Friday and Saturday night in an early battle for first place in the Central Division. Tip-off is scheduled for 8:00 PM both nights at the Physical Activity Complex.
