Late surge boosts Golden Bears over Huskies

Saskatoon, SK - The University of Alberta Golden Bears made their run when it counted the most. With the score tied at 74, Alberta outscored the University of Saskatchewan Huskies 13-1 in the final 1:38 of the game Friday night to earn an 87-75 victory over their divisonal rivals. Alberta (9-3, 3-0 CWC) takes a one-game lead over Saskatchewan (7-8, 2-1) in the Central Division standings.

The same two squads will meet again Saturday night at the Physical Activity Complex, with tip-off scheduled for 8:00 PM.

The game was extremely close the until the final minute and a half, as there were 14 lead changes and 14 ties. Both teams were able to take seven point leads in the first half, with the Huskies coming back to tie the score at 41 at the break. The Golden Bears shot a ridiculous 71.4% from the floor in the first half, while the Huskies shot 55.2%.

Trailing by five with just under 4:30 remaining, the Huskies scored six straight points to grab the lead. A dunk by Andrew Spagrud, then a jumper off the glass by Rejean Chabot was followed by a baseline layup by Clint Unsworth with 2:55 to go, giving the Huskies a 72-71 lead.

The Bears responded on the next possesion, as C.G. Morrison nailed a three in the corner to put them up by two. Kyle Grant tied the game at 74 on a drive to the hoop with 1:59 to play. But Alex Steele would drill another three from the corner with 1:38 to go, giving the Bears the lead for good. Four free throws each by Morrison and Richard Bates helped seal the win.

Spagrud had a game-high 24 points, 14 rebounds and four assists for the Huskies before fouling out in the final minute. Kyle Grant added 21 points and three assists.

Morrison and Steele led five Bears in double-figures with 16 points apiece. Scott Gordon added 14 points. Bates scored 13 points and Andrew Parker added 12 off the bench. Bates also grabbed 14 boards.

Alberta shot 62.5% from the field for the game, while Saskatchewan shot 45.2%. Alberta had a huge advantage at the free throw line, shooting 24-32 while Saskatchewan was 15-21. Alberta turned the ball over 22 times compared to Saskatchewan's 18.

The game had a 15 minute delay in the first half when the lights went out. The delay came with 4:54 left and Alberta leading 33-30, three seconds after Mark Lynch scored a layup for Saskatchewan on an assist by Grant.
