Huskies beat Bears, back in first place

Saskatoon, SK - After dropping their first conference game of the season Friday night, the University of Saskatchewan Huskies responded by defeating the University of Alberta Golden Bears 79-66 Saturday night at the Physical Activity Complex. With the win Saskatchewan (8-8, 3-1 CWC) moves back into a first place tie in the Central Division with Alberta (9-4, 3-1).

The Golden Bears jumped out to an early 7-0 lead, before the Huskies came back with a 9-2 run of their own. The game remained close for the next seven minutes, with the Huskies receiving a spark off the bench from sophomore Clint Unsworth. Unsworth had two dunks, the second off a pass from Sam Lamontagne which tied the game at 21 with 10:38 to play.

Saskatchewan would take the lead for good on a pair of free throws by Kyle Grant, which gave the home squad a 27-25 lead with 6:58 remaining. Jordan Harbidge put Saskatchewan up 45-36 at the half when he hit a three-pointer with 26 seconds left in the frame.

The Huskies jumped out to a 54-40 lead just four minutes into the second half after Rejean Chabot hit a layup. The Bears would cut the lead to 58-53 with just over ten minutes remaining after C.G. Morrison nailed a three. But that's as close as the Bears would get the rest of the way.

With the shotclock running down, Lamontagne drilled a three to give the Huskies a 67-55 lead with 7:35 to go. Chabot later sealed the game when he converted a three-point play with 1:51 to play, making the score 76-64. The Huskies defense would hold the Bears without a field goal for the final 5:56 of the game, as the Bears managed to score just six points from the free throw line the rest of the way.

Andrew Spagrud had his fourth consecutive double-double performance for the Huskies, as he had game-highs of 28 points and 11 rebounds. Chabot, who had five and-one opportunities in the second half alone, finished with 20 points. He also had four assists and two steals. Kyle Grant added 16 points and dished out seven assists.

Alex Steele had 17 points to lead the Bears. Scott Gordon scored 15 points, all in the first half, before fouling out with just under two minutes to play. Morrison ended up with 11 points, all of which came in the second half. Richard Bates contributed eight points and eight boards off the bench.

The Huskies shot 47.8% from the floor for the game, while the Bears shot 46.8%. The Bears tunred the ball over 26 times compared to the Huskies' 16.

Saskatchewan's next game is Friday night at Brandon University (11-2, 3-1). The Bobcats beat the Huskies 80-72 in non-conference action on October 19th at the Huskiehoops.com Shootout. Saturday night Saskatchewan will be in Regina to take on the University of Regina (5-8, 1-3). The Huskies defeated the Cougars 71-64 on October 21st at the Shootout.
