Dogs down Dinos 87-70 Friday night

Saskatoon, SK - The University of Saskatchewan Huskies defeated the University of Calgary Dinos 87-70 Friday night at the Physical Activity Complex. Senior forward Andrew Spagrud scored 29 points, while sophomore Rejean Chabot had a career-high 27 points in the victory for the Huskies.

With the win Saskatchewan (10-11, 5-4 CWC) remains one-game back of first place Alberta in the Central Division standings, while Calgary remains tied for third with Lethbridge (8-12, 3-6). The same two teams will meet again Saturday night in their final game before the Christmas break. Tip-off is scheduled for 8:00 pm.

Leading 20-18 with just under 6:30 remaining in the first half, Saskatchewan went on a 9-0 run over the next 2:10 to open the game up. The run began with a dunk by Clint Unsworth, and was capped by a three-pointer by Spagrud. Saskatchewan would take a 35-26 lead into the locker room at the half.

The Huskies came out on fire in the second half, hitting 11 of their first 13 field goal attempts. Three-pointers by Chabot and Kyle Grant gave the Dogs their biggest lead of the game with 14:31 to play, 57-37. Back-to-back three's by Spagrud put the Huskies up 69-53 with 8:03 to go. The Huskies would go 12-14 from the free throw line in the final two and a half minutes to seal the game.

After shooting only 38.7% from the floor in the first half, the Huskies shot 68.2% in the second frame. The Huskies were 5-10 from downtown and 17-20 from the charity stripe in the second half.

Spagrud, a two-time All-Canadian, had his seventh double-double in nine conference games, finishing with game-highs in points (29) and rebounds (11). He was 4-4 from three-point territory. Chabot set career-highs with 27 points, four assists and five steals. He was 9-13 from the field, including 3-4 from downtown. Grant finished with 12 points, four assists and three steals.

Josh Feist and Robbie Sihota had 15 points each to lead the Dinos. Joseph Schow had 13 points and eight boards.

The Huskies shot 50.9% from the floor for the game, while the Dinos shot 50.0%. The Huskies were 10-21 from beyond the arc. The Dinos turned the ball over 25 times compared to the Huskies' 19.
