Huskies comeback to drop Dinos by six
Saskatoon, SK - The University of Saskatchewan Huskies outscored the University of Calgary Dinos 19-4 over the final 5:31 of the game to earn a crucial 77-71 victory Saturday night at the Physical Activity Complex. Saskatchewan held Calgary without a field goal for the last 5:41 of the game, helping key their comeback from a nine-point deficit.
Saskatchewan (11-11, 6-4 CWC) remains one-game back of first place Alberta in the Central Division standings, and is now three-games up on third place Calgary (8-13, 3-7) and Lethbridge.
The Huskies came out sluggish in the first half, and the Dinos took advantage by holding an early lead. The Dinos led by as much as six before the Huskies made a 10-2 run in the final five minutes to take a 33-31 lead at the half.
Saskatchewan extended their lead to five early in the second half before back-to-back hoops by Ross Bekkering, including an alley-oop dunk, gave Calgary a 45-44 lead with 14:37 to go. A three by Cody Darrah put Calgary up 57-48 with just under ten minutes to play. Saskatchewan would cut the lead to three but Calgary would push the lead back to nine with 5:42 remaining in the game.
From then on it was all Huskies though, as they used their defense and some timely three-point shooting from Jordan Harbidge to take control of the game.
Rejean Chabot led the Huskies with a game-high 19 points. Harbidge finished with 17 points and five assists, and was 5-7 from beyond the arc. Kyle Grant added 14 points and seven assists, while Andrew Spagrud had another double-double with 12 points and a game-high 13 rebounds. He also had four steals and two blocks.
Josh Feist had 17 points and nine steals to lead the Dinos. Bekkering finished with 15 points and nine boards, while Darrah and Robbie Sihota scored 14 points each.
The Huskies shot 52.5% from the floor for the game, while the Dinos shot 44.9%. The Huskies were only 9-21 from the free throw line, while the Dinos were 22-25. The Dinos turned the ball over 29 times compared to the Huskies' 25. The Huskies outscored the Dinos 36-20 off of turnovers.
Saskatchewan will see it's next action when they travel to Montana after Christmas for a pair of non-conference games against two NAIA schools. Saskatchewan will play at Montana Tech on December 29th (5:00 pm MST), and then face Montana State-Northern on December 30th (1:00 PM MST).
