Huskies fall short against Montana Tech
Butte, Mont. - The University of Saskatchewan Huskies were back in action Friday night for the first time since December 2nd as they took on the Montana Tech Orediggers. Tech, an NAIA Division I school, managed to hold off a late Saskatchewan charge and came out on top 67-64.
Saskatchewan (11-12, 6-4 Canada West) at times looked like a team playing for the first time in 26 days, as they struggled to finish around the basket. Montana Tech (5-8) will open Frontier Conference play next week.
The first half was a back and forth affair, with the lead changing hands multiple times. Freshman guard Chris Bodnar, who is redshirting this season saw his first action as a Huskie, came off the bench and hit back-to-back three-pointers giving the Huskies a 31-30 lead with 4:30 to play in the half. The Orediggers came back to hold a slim 38-37 lead at the break.
The Orediggers held an eight-point lead with five minutes to play. Kyle Grant drew the Huskies to within four with four minutes left on a layup with an assist from Jordan Harbidge. Two free throws by Grant cut the lead to 66-64 with 1:02 remaining, but that's as close as the Huskies would get. Sam Conley hit one free throw with 18.2 seconds left to make the score 67-64, and the Huskies could not hit their final three-point attempt.
Grant had a game-high 19 points and eight rebounds to lead Saskatchewan. Andrew Spagrud added 12 points and seven boards. Bodnar finished with six points and also had four steals in seven minutes.
Conley had 19 points for Montana Tech. Casey Briggs added 13 points and six boards.
Tech turned the ball over 23 times while Saskatchewan gave it up 18 times. Both teams struggled from downtown, as Tech was just 4-21 and Saskatchewan was 3-18.
The Huskies shot just 40.0% from the floor for the game, while the Orediggers shot 48.3%. The Orediggers won the battle on the boards 39-30.
Saskatchewan's will travel to Havre to take on Montana State-Northern on Saturday afternoon. Tip-off is scheduled for 1:30 pm at the MSU-Northern Fieldhouse.
