Dogs explode to win big on road Jockims passes Vetrie with school record 149th victory
Lethbridge, Alta. - The Saskatchewan Huskies kicked off the second half of conference play with a 104-70 win over the host Lethbridge Pronghorns Friday night. A strong effort at both ends of floor enabled Saskatchewan (15-12, 6-5 Canada West) to pull away from Lethbridge (3-23, 0-11) in the second half.
The victory was the 149th at Saskatchewan for head coach Greg Jockims, moving him into first place on the school's career wins list. Guy Vetrie previously held the record, accumulating 148 wins over his nine seasons on the bench. Jockims, in his tenth season, spent five years playing for Vetrie during his career with Saskatchewan in the mid-eighties.
With just over two minutes remaining in the third quarter the Huskies used a 25-6 run over the next six minutes to put the game out of reach. During that stretch Spagrud began the fourth quarter with a massive alley-oop dunk over the Pronghorns defenders on a nice feed from fellow fifth-year senior Jordan Harbidge. The run put the the Huskies up 84-54. The Huskies connected on 22 of the final 23 attempts at the free throw line to help seal the win.
Spagrud finished with game-highs of 31 points and 14 rebounds while going 11-17 from the floor. Lovelace added 20 points, and was 9-12 from the charity stripe. He also had five assists. Kyle Grant had 12 points to go along with six steals. Junior forward Troy Gottselig had seven points and nine boards, while Harbidge added eight points and six assists off the bench. Mark Lynch, playing in front of family and friends from his hometown of Calgary, had nine points.
The Huskies shot 56.9% from the field for the game, while the 'Horns were only 40.6%. The Pronghorns were 10-22 from beyond the arc, while the Huskies were 9-16. The Dogs hit 29 of 39 attempts from the line, while the 'Horns were 8-13. Lethbridge had 22 turnovers for the game, ten more than the Huskies.
