Huskies sweep season series with 'Horns

Lethbridge, Alta. - The Saskatchewan Huskies swept the weekend, and the conference season series, with the Lethbridge Pronghorns with a 93-79 victory Saturday night. Saskatchewan (16-12, 7-5 Canada West) won all four conference games over Lethbridge (3-23, 0-12) this year.

The Huskies are three games back of first place Calgary in the Central Division, and one game behind second place Alberta. Lethbridge remains in last place in the division.

The Huskies got off to a fast start, opening up an 18-3 lead before the Pronghorns hit their first field goal with 5:06 to go in the first quarter. The 'Horns managed to close the gap to 26-17 at the end of the period, taking advantage of Huskie fouls and converting their free throws. The Dogs pushed the lead back to double-digits after Troy Gottselig rammed home a put-back dunk off a missed layup. A three-point play by Andrew Spagrud with 3:42 remaining before the half put the Huskies up 40-28.

But Lethbridge made a run of it's own, hitting five three's before halftime to cut the lead to 48-44 at the break. Shawn Nelson hit four of those three's, all with hands right in his face.

The 'Horns started the third quarter with a 12-4 run, taking a 56-53 lead after freshman guard Quinn Van Gaalen hit back-to-back three's. The lead would be short-lived however, as a layup by Spagrud put the Dogs up 59-58 with 4:07 to play. Jordan Harbidge nailed a a shot from beyond the arc on the next possesion as the Huskies grabbed the lead for good.

Sophomore Tim Hollman hit a big trey with 7:56 remaining in the fourth quarter to put the Huskies up 73-63. Clutch free throw shooting throughout the quarter allowed the Huskeis to increase their lead and hold on for the victory.

Spagrud had his second straight 30-plus point night, collecting a game-high 36 points on 11-15 shooting. He also grabbed seven rebounds. Gottselig added 17 points and a game-high nine boards. He was 7-11 from the floor. Rob Lovelace had 15 points and seven assists. Kyle Grant dished out six assists.

Van Gaalen had 20 points to lead the Pronghorns. Nelson added 17 off the bench, going 5-6 from beyond the arc. Newcomer Danhue Lawrence scored 14 points, but was 0-8 from downtown and had eight turnovers.

The Huskies shot 55.1% from the field for the game, while the 'Horns were only 41.3%. The Pronghorns were 10-30 from beyond the arc, while the Huskies were 4-10. The Dogs hit 35 of 49 attempts from the line, while the 'Horns were 17-30. Lethbridge committed 40 fouls for the game, 15 more than the Huskies.
