Huskies dominant at home over Spartans

Saskatoon, Sask. - The Saskatchewan Huskies returned home to the Physical Activity Complex Friday night for the first time in almost two months, and put together a solid performance as they defeated the Trinity Western Spartans 104-66.

Saskatchewan (17-14, 8-7 Canada West) will host the Simon Fraser Clan (10-17, 9-8) Saturday night. Tip-off is scheduled for seven o'clock. TWU (10-16, 6-11) will travel to Edmonton to take on Alberta tomorrow night.

The Huskies led wire-to-wire and were up 50-32 at the half. The Huskies began the third quarter with a 19-4 run over the first seven minutes. The run was started by an Andrew Spagrud alley-oop dunk off of a Jordan Harbidge pass, and capped by a Mark Lynch dunk and three-point play off a nice assist from Kyle Grant.

Rob Lovelace scored seven straight points in the middle of the fourth period to put the Dogs up 33. The Huskies pushed the lead to as much as 41 in the final minute of the fourth quarter, as they scored 33 points in the period.

Spagrud led all scorers with 27 points on 12-17 shooting. He aslo had eight rebounds and five steals. Lovelace added 20 points and four steals, while Grant added 11 points and four assists. Harbidge dished out a game-high seven assists, as all twelve Huskies who dressed hit the scoresheet. Chris Bodnar handed out six assists off the bench.

Jason Keegsrta had 21 points and seven boards to lead the Spartans. Michael Brouwer and Luke Robinson added 12 points each. Brouwer and Lance Verhoeff each had seven rebounds as well.

Saskatchewan shot a blistering 61.3% from the field for the game. They were able to hold the Spartans to 34.2% shooting from the floor in the second half, and 41.9% for the game. The Dogs hit 13 of 24 attempts from beyond the arc, as eight different players hit at least one three. The Spartans were only 3-18 from downtown. The Spartans turned the ball over 28 times compared to the Huskies' 17.

The Huskies remain five games back of first place Calgary in the Central Division, and two games behind second place Alberta.

Notes: Huskie head coach Greg Jockims was honoured prior to the game for setting the school record for career wins by a coach. Jockims was presented with a plaque by Athletic Director Bill Seymour for passing the late Guy Vetrie with his 149th victory at Lethbridge January 4th... The Huskies started all five of their fifth-year seniors for the second time this season. The only other game they all started was November 16th vs. Brandon.
