Defense helps lead Huskies to victory

Grant sets school career record with 261 three's

Saskatoon, Sask. - The Saskatchewan Huskies held the Simon Fraser Clan to 10 points in the fourth quarter on their way to a 81-65 victory Saturday night at the Physical Activity Complex.

Saskatchewan (18-14, 9-7 Canada West) remains two games back of second place Alberta in the Central Division standings. Saskatchewan will host Alberta for two games next weekend. Simon Fraser Clan (10-18, 9-9) is still in third place in the Pacific Division.

The first quarter was a close affair, with neither team able to break the game open. Tim Hollman came off the bench to give the Huskies a spark near the end of the period though, drilling a three and a tough left-handed finish before hitting freshman Mac Fairbairn with a backdoor pass for a layup. That put the Dogs up 18-16 after one period.

Greg Wallis, who sat a good portion of the half with two fouls, kept the Clan in it the next quarter, and hit a short jumper to tie the game at 37 at the break.

But the Huskies came out hot to start the third quarter for the second straight night. A 13-5 run over the first three minutes, including nine consecutive points by Jordan Harbidge, gave the home squad an eight point lead.

The Huskies continued to push the lead, and a Rob Lovelace three with 8:35 to go in the fourth period put the Dogs up 67-56. A steal by Mark Lynch and subsequent dunk by Andrew Spagrud made the score 75-63 with just under three minutes remaining, and helped seal the win. The Huskies held the Clan to 25% shooting from the field in the last quarter.

All five starters reached double-figures for the Huskies. Spagrud led the way with 16 points and 11 rebounds. Lovelace had 15 points to go along with six boards and six assists.

Kyle Grant finished with 14 points and seven assists. He also set the school record for most career three-pointers when he hit from downtown eleven seconds into the second half. It was his 261st three-pointer, breaking Darrin Rask's (1987-93) record.

Harbidge and Mark Lynch also added a dozen points each. Lynch scored all his points in a strong second half, and also grabbed seven boards.

Wallis led the Clan with a game-high 23 points on 9-14 shooting. Forward Nolan Holmes was the only other player in double-figures with 12 points. Eric Burrell had six rebounds off the bench.

The Huskies shot 52.5% from the floor for the game, while the Clacn was only 42.9%. The Huskies hit 8-21 shots from beyond the arc, while the Clan only hit 3 of their 15 attempts.
