Seniors spark Huskies in win over Bears

Saskatoon, Sask. - The Saskatchewan Huskies forced 26 turnovers while holding the Alberta Golden Bears to 52 points Saturday night, on their way to a 74-52 victory at the Physical Activity Complex.

Saskatchewan (19-15, 10-8 Canada West) scored 29 points off of those turnovers, and remains two games back of Alberta (17-7, 12-6) for second place in the Central Division standings.

"That was largely due to the fact that we forced them to shoot from outside the paint," Huskie head coach Greg Jockims said about the low scoring Bears. "We showed a much more consistent intensity tonight and that was because of the play by our seniors."

The first quarter went back and forth until sophomore Tim Hollman nailed a three to put the home squad up 14-12 and give them the lead for good. That three ignited a 11-0 run to close the quarter, and the Dogs were up 22-12 after one period.

The Huskies continued their strong defensive effort in the second quarter, again holding the Bears to just 12 points and without a field goal for the last 4:51 of the half. Senior Rob Lovelace hit two of his four three-pointers during the period, and the Dogs led 33-24 at the break.

The Huskies held the Bears without a field goal for over eight minutes during the end of the third and beginning of the fourth quarters. Up 51-43 with 2:34 to play in the third quarter, the Huskies outscored the Bears 19-5 over the next ten minutes of play. One of the hi-lites during that stretch was a steal by senior Kyle Grant who then threw a perfect alley-oop pass to Andrew Spagrud for the slam.

Saskatchewan outscored Alberta 17-9 in the fourth quarter to seal the game.

Lovelace had a game-high 20 points to lead the Huskies. He was 7-11 from the floor and also dished out four assists. Junior Troy Gottselig added 14 points off the bench, and was 8-8 from the free throw line. Grant had 13 points as well as three steals, while Spagrud finished with 12 points and 13 rebounds. He was only 5-17 from the field, but did hand out six assists.

Alex Steele and C.G. Morrison had 11 points each for the Golden Bears. Andrew Parker and Richard Bates each grabbed four boards.

The Huskies won the battle on the glass, outrerbounding the Bears 34-25, and holding the visitors to just two offensive rebounds. The Huskies had a 14-0 advantage in second chance points.

The Bears outshot the Huskies 46.3% to 41.7 percent from the field. The Dogs weere 8-22 from beyond the arc, while the Bears were only 2-11. Both teams excelled at the line, as the Huskies went 16-18 and the Bears were 12-14. The Huskies only turned the ball over 11 times.

Saskatchewan travels to the west coast next weekend to face the Victoria Vikes on Friday and UBC Thunderbirds on Saturday. Alberta will make the same trip, playing the same schools in reverse order.
