Huskies win over No. 3 Dinos on Senior Night
Saskatoon, Sask. - The Saskatchewan Huskies quintet of fifth-year seniors went out in style, defeating the No. 3-ranked Calgary Dinos 86-73 at the Physical Activity Complex on Senior Night Saturday evening.
An enthusiastic crowd of almost 1200 people helped honour the five seniors prior to the game, and witnessed history during the game as Andrew Spagrud broke the Canada West Conference all-time career scoring record.
Mark Lynch, Kyle Grant, Jordan Harbidge, Rob Lovelace and Spagrud all started their final conference game. During a pregame ceremony they were the subject of a video tribute which was shown on the videoboard, and each received a big framed picture of themselves in action as Huskies.
Saskatchewan (21-17, 12-10 Canada West) and Calgary (29-8, 18-4) were playing their final conference game of the season. Saskatchewan will travel to Edmonton next weekend to play the Alberta Golden Bears (21-7, 16-6) in the best-of-three Central Division semi-final.
The first half was a tight affair, with neither team able to break the game open. Kyle Grant hit from beyond the arc with 2:13 left in the first quarter, putting the Huskies up 19-17. They would never trail after that, but still couldn't pull away from the Dinos. A three by Jordan Harbidge put the Huskies up 31-23 with 7:07 to go in the second period, giving them their biggest lead of the half. A layup by junior Troy Gottselig off an assist from freshman Chris Bodnar with one second remaining gave the Dogs a 47-40 lead at the break.
Spagrud tied Richard Bohne's record of 2171 points on a couple of free throws with 5:05 to play in the third quarter. With 2:58 to go in the quarter, the record fell as Spagrud put home a layup off a feed from Gottselig as the crowd erupted. The game was stopped at the next deadball, and Spagrud was presented with the gameball and a standing ovation from the Huskie faithful.
Another three by Grant off an assist from Lovelace put the home side up 85-73 with 2:23 to play, sealing the game.
Spagrud finished with game-highs of 28 points and 11 rebounds to lead the hot-shooting Huskies. Grant had 20 points on 7-8 shooting, including 4-5 from downtown. Lovelace had 12 points and a game-high five assists. Lynch added 10 points, all in the first half, while Harbidge had nine points on 3-6 shooting from beyond the arc.
Henry Bekkering had 20 points and five boards before fouling out with five minutes to play. Jeff Price had 17 points and cemented his reputation as the top free throw shooter in the league going 9-10 from the line. Junior Robbie Sihota had 12 points and five rebounds.
The Huskies shot 58.8% from the floor for the game, while the Dinos only hit 42.6% of their shots. The Huskies were 7-18 from three-point land, and 19-28 from the chrarity stripe. The Dinos were only 3-17 from downtown, but hit 18 of their 21 free throw attempts.
While the Huskies travel to Edmonton next weekend, the Dinos will enjoy a first round bye in the playoffs. They will host the winner of the semi-final in Calgary the following weekend.
Notes: Grant broke the school record for three-pointers in a conference season with 64. David Karwacki previously held the record of 61 set during the 1987-88 season.
