Saskatchewan defeats Lakeland on road
Lloydminster, AB - The University of Saskatchewan Huskies took advantage of huge runs to start the first and third quarters Saturday afternoon at Lakeland College. Saskatchewan (1-3) would go on to a 104-67 victory, it's first of the season, while the Lakeland Rustlers (0-1) dropped their season opener.
The Huskies began the game with an 24-5 run over the first 4:47 of the game. The Rustlers would claw their way back though, hitting seven three-pointers in the first half to trail 53-43 at halftime. The Huskies shot 66.7% (20-30) in the first half, but 11 turnovers kept Lakeland within striking distance.
Saskatchewan outscored Lakeland 27-8 to begin the third quarter, taking a commanding 83-57 lead after thirty minutes of play. Saskatchewan held Lakeland to just three field goals in the fourth quarter, and went on to a 37-point victory.
Andrew Spagrud had game-highs of 24 points and 12 rebounds for Saskatchewan, while Rejean Chabot added 22 points, four steals and four assists. Clint Unsworth was a perfect 5-5 from the field for 11 points, collected five boards and blocked three shots. Transfer Troy Gottselig started the game and had nine points and eight rebounds. Rob Lovelace came off the bench to score nine points while David Neufeld had eight points on 3-3 shooting.
Eric Zimmerman led Lakeland with 17 points on 7-11 shooting from the field. Nathan Dixon (Saskatoon, SK), a transfer from Red Deer College, had 12 points but was only 5-17 from the floor. Ossie Hinds added 10 points and a team-high six rebounds.
The Huskies shot 58.7% from the field for the game, and held the Rustlers to just 38.0%. The Rustlers were 9-30 from beyond the arc, while the Huskies were just 4-13. The Huskies shot 70.3% (26-37) from the free throw line, while the Rustlers shot only 28.6% (4-14).
Saskatchewan played without fifth-year senior guard Kyle Grant (knee) and junior guard Mark Thompson (hip).
Saskatchewan will meet Lakeland again on Thursday, October 4th in a neutral site contest. That game is scheduled for a 7:00 pm tip-off at Warman, Saskatchewan.
