Huskies survive scare from Rustlers

Warman, Sask. - The University of Saskatchewan Huskies survived by the thinnest of margins Thursday night against Lakeland College. In a non-conference game played at Warman High School, junior guard Rejean Chabot hit two free throws with 5.3 seconds to go to give Saskatchewan an 80-79 victory.

The Rustlers (2-3) put together a terrific game, while the Huskies (2-3) had an abysmal performance which included 27 turnovers. The Huskies outscored the Rustlers 26-16 in the first quarter, but were outscored 63-54 the rest of the way.

The final thirty seconds became a free throw shooting contest, with both teams struggling until Chabot stepped to the line and buried the winning points. After the Rustlers' Steffan Favis missed two from the charity stripe with just over thirty seconds to play, Spagrud missed both of his attempts with 11.6 seconds to go. Troy Gottselig grabbed the offensive rebound and was fouled, but was only able to hit one of his two attempts. Favis was put on the line again with 7.4 seconds to play, but was unable to extend the Rustlers one-point lead.

Spagrud had game-highs of 28 points and 14 rebounds for Saskatchewan in 28 minutes. Chabot added 21 points and a career-high nine assists, and was 6-7 from the free throw line. Gottselig had 15 points on 7-8 shooting from the field, as well as six rebounds. Guard Rob Lovelace had 11 points.

Nathan Dixon (Saskatoon, SK), a transfer from Red Deer College, had 21 points on 8-19 shooting from the floor. Ossie Hinds added 14 points, while Aubrey Chalmers had 13 points and team-highs of six boards and six assists.

The Huskies shot 53.6% from the field for the game, while the Rustlers shot 48.5%. The Rustlers were 7-20 from beyond the arc, while the Huskies were just 3-13. The Huskies shot 63.0% (17-27) from the free throw line, while the Rustlers shot only 33.3% (6-18).

Saskatchewan played without fifth-year senior guard Kyle Grant (knee) and junior forward Clint Unsworth (finger).

The game marked the first time the Huskies have ever played in Warman, which is located 15 kilometers north of Saskatoon.

Saskatchewan travels to Brandon to take on Simon Fraser next Thursday to begin the Super 8 Tournament, while Lakeland travels south to take on the University of Regina Friday night.
