Saskatchewan beats SFU in overtime
Brandon, Man. - The Saskatchewan Huskies opened up play at the Super 8 Tournament in Brandon with an exciting 81-75 overtime win over the Simon Fraser Clan. With the game tied at 68 at the end of regulation, Saskatchewan outscored SFU 13-7 in the extra frame to earn an 81-75 victory.
Saskatchewan (3-3) will take on Lakehead (0-1) on Friday (6 pm CDT), while SFU (0-4) will take on host Brandon (1-0). Brandon defeated Lakehead 97-66 in the second game of the night.
The Clan jumped out to an early 21-14 lead after the first quarter. The Huskies came back and took a 25-23 lead on a Rob Lovelace three-pointer with 7:01 to go in the second quarter. The score remained close the rest of the half, and Rejean Chabot's converted and one play put the Huskies up 34-31 with 2:54 on the clock. The Huskies had a 39-38 lead at halftime. Both teams shot the ball well in the first half, as the Clan shot 53.3% and the Huskies were 51.7% from the field. Matt Kuzminski was 3-3 from beyond the arc for the Clan in the first 20 minutes. The Huskies needed some solid defense to help them stay in the game in the second half, as they shot only 26.7% from the field after the break. Just over two minutes into the half, Andrew Spagrud gave the Dogs a spark with a three-point play on a massive dunk, giving the Dogs a 45-43 lead. The Clan led 58-56 at the end of three quarters. Saskatchewan had plenty of chances to try and pull away from SFU, creating 16 second half turnovers. But missed free throws and missed opportunities kept the score close. Trailing by two with just under a minute to play, Saskatchewan forced another turnover with an eight-second voilation. Kyle Grant, playing his first game since suffering a knee injury on Labour Day weekend, promptly buried a three to take a 67-66 lead with 38.1 seconds to go. With the shot clock running down, junior guard Sean Burke put a soft runner high off the glass to put the Clan up by one. Spagrud then hit one of two free throws with 1.7 seconds remaining to knot the game at 68 and send it into overtime. Three-point plays dominated the scoring in the extra frame, as Lovelace drilled a three to open the scoring. Grant would hit another big three with 2:11 remaining in the overtime period, putting the Huskies up 76-72. A three-point play by Chabot with 43.6 seconds to go put the Huskies up 81-74, and they would hold on for the victory. Spagrud had a game-high 29 points and 12 boards for the Huskies before fouling out with a minute to play in overtime. Chabot, who helped hold Clan sharp-shooter Kevin Shaw to 1-9 shooting, had 14 points and game-highs of five steals and four assists. Lovelace and Grant also had 14 points each. Burke led the Clan with 18 points, hitting a couple of big shots along the way. Greg Wallis had 16 points and 13 rebounds, while Kuzminski finished with 13 points. SFU shot 48.4% from the floor for the game, while the Huskies were only 41.5%. The Huskies had a horrible night at the free throw line, shooting only 53.8% (21-39). The Clan shot 71.4% (10-14) from the charity stripe. The Clan committed 25 turnovers, while the Huskeis turned it over 16 times.
