Second quarter run propels Dogs to victory

Brandon, Man. - Trailing by one after the first quarter, the University of Saskatchewan Huskies used a 20-0 run to begin the second quarter and blow the game open against the Lakehead University Thunderwolves Friday night. Saskatchewan (4-3) would go on to win 104-84, and will meet Brandon (2-0) for the Super 8 Tournament title Saturday night.

Brandon defeated Simon Fraser 89-82 in the night's second game. Lakehead (0-2) will close out the tournament against SFU (0-5) in the early game Saturday night.

The Thunderwolves led 17-26 after one quarter. But the Huskies exploded to open up the second frame, scoring 20 straight points over the first 3:30 of the period. Kyle Grant nailed a three-pointer and converted a three-point play during the run. The Huskies led 50-32 at the break.

Jordan Harbidge drilled a three at the end of the third quarter to put the Huskies up 80-57, and opened the fourth quarter with another trey to give the Huskies their largest lead of the game.

Grant led Saskatchewan with 19 points, and was 4-8 from downtown. All-Canadian Andrew Spagrud finished with 18 points and 10 boards. Harbidge added 18 points off the bench, shooting 7-8 from the field while hitting all four of his three-point attempts. Rejean Chabot and Mark Lynch had 11 points apiece, and Chabot dished out a game-high six assists.

Kiraan Posey had 47 points to lead Lakehead, shooting 15-27 from the field and 15-19 from the free throw line. It's the first time Saskatchewan has given up 30-plus points to an opposing player since September 28, 2005 (Joel Hunter, Regina, 31). Posey also had six rebounds and six turnovers. Matt Verboom had eight points and four boards.

The Huskies shot 53.2% from the floor for the game, while the Thunderwolves shot 46.9%. The Huskies were 9-22 from beyond the arc, while the Thunderwolves were only 3-18. The Huskies shot 78.4% (29-37) from the charity stripe, while the 'Wolves were 72.4% (21-29).

The two teams will meet again next Saturday night in Saskatoon to close out the Ninth Annual Huskiehoops.com Shootout.
