Bobcats take Super 8 title over Dogs

Brandon, Man. - The Brandon University Bobcats defeated the University of Saskatchewan Huskies 103-87 Saturday night to claim the championship at the Super 8 Tournament. In a battle of two Canada West Final Four teams from last season, the Bobcats used an 11-point advantage in the third quarter to pull away from the Huskies and hold on for the victory.

Saskatchewan (4-4) led 25-23 after the first frame, but trailed 48-44 at the halftime break. Brandon (3-0) shot 69.0% from the field in the first half.

Trailing by 18 points with 7:30 remaining, the Huskies began to chip away at the lead, cutting it to eight on a three-pointer by Jordan Harbidge with 3:05 to play. But that's as close as the Dogs would get, as turnovers down the stretch allowed the Bobcats to push thier lead back up to 19.

Andrew Spagrud led the Huskies with 23 points, six rebounds and eight assists. Rejean Chabot added 16 points, all in the first half, and four assists. Rob Lovelace had 15 points.

Fifth-year senior Yul Michel had a game-high 26 points on 10-12 shooting to lead the Bobcats. Michel also dished out nine assists. Adam Hartman has 23 points and six boards, while Yuri Whyms added 16 points on 8-10 shooting.

Brandon shot a ridiculous 66.2% from the floor for the game, while Saskatchewan shot 51.7%. Saskatchewan hit 10 of their 25 attempts from downtown, while Branodn was 4-9.

Both teams shot well from the line, as the Huskies hit 15 of 16 free throws and the Bobcats were 13-17.

The Huskies will be in action next week as the host the Huskiehoops.com Shootout beginning Thursday night.
