Huskies host Shootout beginning tonight

Saskatoon, Sask. - The University of Saskatchewan Huskies will host the Ninth Annual Huskiehoops.com Shootout beginning Thursday night. Saskatchewan will be joined in the tournament by Memorial, Lakehead and Regina.

Saskatchewan will be looking to capture their first Shootout title since the 2004 edition. Saskatchewan (4-4) enters the non-conference tournament having won four of it's last five games. The Huskies are led by five fifth-year seniors, including three-time All-Canadian Andrew Spagrud, and have all five starters back from last year's squad.

The Huskies will take on the Memorial Sea-Hawks (1-2) on Thursday night at the Physical Activity Complex (7:00 pm). In the opening game (5:00 pm), the Lakehead Thunderwolves (1-2) will play the Regina Cougars (1-0).

Memorial, from St. John's, Newfoundland, will be making it's first appearance in Saskatoon since they played in the 2002 Shootout.

Saskatchewan defeated Lakehead 104-84 last Friday night at the Super 8 Tournament in Brandon. Lakehead is led by guard Kiraan Posey, who's 47-point outburst against the Dogs set a school record.

Regina looks forward to the return of fifth-year senior guard Bryden Wright, who missed all of last season due to injury. The Cougars also feature last year's Canada West Conference freshman of the year Jeff Lukomski, a big three-point threat.

In addition to the six games in three nights, there will also be another major event on Saturday. The Ken Shields Coaching Clinic will feature four-hours with one of the best basketball coaches in the world. Shields has coached the Canadian national team, and also led the University of Victoria to seven consecutive National Championships in the 1980's. He has also coached with the national team programs in Japan and Australia, going to the 2004 Olympic Games. This past summer he was the head coach of the Georgian national team.
