Huskies blast Sea-Hawks in Shootout opener

Saskatoon, Sask. - The University of Saskatchewan Huskies opened the Ninth Annual Huskiehoops.com Shootout with a 99-47 victory over the Memorial University Sea-Hawks Thursday night. Saskatchewan (5-4) will play Regina (2-0), who defeated Lakehead 85-73 in the early game, on Friday night. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 pm at the Physical Activity Complex. Memorial (1-3) will take on Lakehead (1-3) in the early game beginning at 5:00 pm.

The Huskies got an early spark from their bench in the first half. Freshman guard Brennan Jarrett made the score 13-10 in favour of the Dogs with a three with 4:08 remaining in the first frame, putting the Dogs up for good. Mac Fairbairn, another freshman guard, came in off the bench and created some turnovers which turned into easy points at the other end. His steal and dunk with 1:58 left in the half put the Dogs up 50-22.

Saskatchewan began the third quarter with a 10-0 run, holding Memorial scoreless for over five minutes. A three-point play by Andrew Spagrud put the home squad up 63-29 with 5:24 to play in the period. the Dogs held the Sea-Hawks to 22.2% shooting in the seocnd half, after they shot 52.0% during the first half.

All twelve players hit the scoresheet for the Huskies, who simply over matched the young Sea-Hawks. The Huskies forced the the Sea-Hawks into 34 turnovers, while only turning it over 10 times themselves. That led to a 48-3 advantage in points off of turnovers. The Huskies depth kept up the pressure, as their bench scored 58 points in the game.

Andrew Spagrud had a game-high 21 points in 18 minutes. Jarrett had a career-high 12 points, going 4-5 from the field. Fairbairn also has his best game as a Huskie so far, scoring 10 points, dishing out three assists and grabbing four steals. Junior forward Clint Unsworth added 11 points on 4-4 shooting. Jordan Harbidge had a game-high six assists and four steals.

The Huskies had dunks from four different players for the first time in recent memory. Spagrud, with two, Fairbairn, Unsworth and fifth-year senior forward Mark Lynch all threw down during the game.

Mark English led the Sea-Hawks with 12 points. Jason Shepherd added nine points, while Grant Harvey grabbed a game-high seven rebounds.

The Huskies shot 61.4% from the floor for the game, and held the Sea-Hawks to 36.5% shooting. The Huskies converted 23 of 34 attempts at the free throw line, while the Sea-Hawks were only 7-14. The Sea-Hawks outrebounded the Dogs 34 to 22, as they collected 15 offensive boards.

Regina 85, Lakehead 73

Regina used a 23-4 run to begin the third quarter to blow open the game against Lakehead, giving them their largest lead of the night. Regina, which was up 40-35 at halftime, got a putback dunk from junior Jayes Tarka as they seized control of the game.

Lakehead, which was accessed five technical fouls during the game, would cut the lead to 11 with one minute to go in the game on a three-point play by Ryan Precious but it would be to little to late.

Junior guard Paul Schubach led the Cougars with 21 points, going 8-9 from the free throw line. Fifth-year senior Bryden Wright added 19 points. Jeff Lukomski had 13 points, and was 3-4 from beyond the arc. Sophomore forward Kris Heshka added 11 points and eight boards.

Kiraan Posey put up 26 points and nine rebounds to lead the Thunderwolves. Warren Thomas had 17 points before leaving the game after picking up his second technical. Both Posey and Thomas had eight turnovers on the night.

The Cougars shot 48.3% for the game, while the Thunderwolves shot 45.3%. The 'Wolves were 19-22 from the charity stripe, while the Cougars were 24-33.

Note: The Ken Shields Coaching Clinic will feature four-hours with one of the best basketball coaches in the world. Shields has coached the Canadian national team, and also led the University of Victoria to seven consecutive National Championships in the 1980's. He has also coached with the national team programs in Japan and Australia, going to the 2004 Olympic Games. This past summer he was the head coach of the Georgian national team.

The clinic runs on Saturday from 9:30 am to 2:15 pm at the Physical Activity Complex.
