Huskies stave off Cougar comeback

Saskatoon, Sask. - The Saskatchewan Huskies weathered a 19-3 third-quarter run by the Regina Cougars and held on for a 70-67 at the Ninth Annual Huskiehoops.com Shootout Friday night.

Saskatchewan (6-4) will attempt to capture the Shootout title for the first time since 2004 when they play Lakehead (2-3), who defeated Memorial 78-66 in the early game, on Saturday night. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 pm at the Physical Activity Complex. Memorial (1-4) will take on Regina (2-1) in the early game at 5:00 pm.

The Huskies used some strong defense to build a 15-point halftime lead. The Dogs held the Cougars scoreless for the first five minutes of the game, but could only manage to score seven points of their own before the Cougars hit the scoreboard. Kyle Grant scored eight straight points to close the first half, and the Huskies took a 38-23 lead into the locker room.

Trailing by 17 two minutes into the third period, Regina made their run and cut the lead to one on a dunk by Jayes Tarka with 1:25 to go. Saskatchewan led 49-44 after three quarters.

The Cougars would tie the game at 58 on a jumper by fifth-year senior Bryden Wright with just under five minutes remaining in the game, but Rejean Chabot nailed a three on the next possesion to put the Huskies up for good.

Grant led the Huskies with a game-high 24 points. Chabot added 17 points and four assists. Mark Lynch had nine points and four rebounds off the bench. Junior forward Clint Unsworth, who started the game in place of an injured Andrew Spagrud, grabbed nine boards.

Point guard Paul Schubach had 16 points to lead the Cougars. Wright had 15 points, while sophomore Kris Heshka put up 14 points and grabbed 10 rebounds before fouling out.

The Huskies outshot the Cougars 43.6% to 42.2% from the field. Both the Huskies (4-18) and the Cougars (4-21) shot poorly from beyond the arc and the free throw line (56.3% each).

Lakehead 78, Memorial 66

The teams were tied at 44 with 2:16 to go in the third quarter, when Lakehead went on an 18-2 run over the next four minutes to blow the game open. Forward Warren Thomas scored 10 of his game-high 23 points during the decisive run. Kiraan Posey added 20 points, 10 rebounds and four assists. Matthew Verboom had 13 points and nine boards off the bench.

Grant Harvey led four Sea-Hawks in double-figures with 16 points. Mark English had 14 points, and was 4-6 from beyond the arc.

The Sea-Hawks shot 51.0% for the game, while the Thunderwolves shot 46.6% from the floor. The 'Wolves were 22-29 from the charity stripe, while the Sea-Hawks were 12-18.
