Huskies knock off Rams in Lethbridge

Lethbridge, Alta. - The Saskatchewan Huskies opened up play at the Apex Alarm Invitational Thursday night by defeating the Ryerson Rams 95-79 at the 1st Choice Savings Centre. Saskatchewan will face the host Lethbridge Pronghorns Friday night.

Saskatchewan (8-4) had all nine players that dressed score, with six reaching double-figures.

Ryerson (0-6) will play Rocky Mountain College (1-0), which beat Lethbridge (2-7) 79-62 in the late game.

The Huskies got off to a quick 8-0 lead to begin the first quarter, as Kyle Grant drilled a three with 8:17 to go. The Huskies led 25-18 after one period.

Freshman Brennan Jarrett hit another three-ball to put the Dogs up 41-28 with just over four minutes to play in the second quarter. The Huskies were up 46-36 at the break.

A jumper by junior Troy Gottselig with 2:02 remaining in the third period gave the Huskies their largest lead of the game, 70-49. The Rams would score the final six points of the period.

In the fourth a three-pointer by Brandon Krupa cut the lead to 80-70 with 5:06 to play, but Saskatchewan would push the lead back up to 18 and hold on for the victory.

Kyle Grant led a balanced Huskie attack with 18 points, going 3-4 beyond the arc. Jordan Harbidge added 16 points on 5-6 shooting. Jarrett and Gottselig had 13 points apiece, while Clint Unsworth and David Neufeld added 11 points each. Unsworth also had eight rebounds.

Boris Bakovic led the Rams with 32 points and 12 boards. He was 13-19 from the floor. Krupa had 14 points, hitting four of eight from downtown. Joseph Imbrogno had 12 points on 6-7 shooting.

The Huskies outshot the Rams 51.5% to 50.8% for the game. The Huskies hit 18 of 21 attempts from the free throw line, while the Rams were 8-11. Both teams shot well from beyond the arc, as the Huskies were 9-18 while the Rams were 7-16.
