Huskies comeback to knock off 'Horns in OT
Saskatoon, Sask. - The University of Saskatchewan Huskies came from behind to defeat the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns 100-95 in overtime Friday night at the Physical Activity Complex.
Trailing almost the entire first three quarters by 20 points or more, Huskie fifth-year senior guard Jordan Harbidge made a clutch three-point shot with 12.8 seconds left to tie the score at 86 and force the game into overtime.
"We had to go away from what we normally do because it just wasn’t working," said Huskie head coach Greg Jockims after the game. "Give credit to our fifth year seniors and Chris Bodnar for stepping up at the end and playing hard."
The Huskies (12-9, 4-3 Canada West) move four games up on the Pronghorns (3-15, 0-7) in the Central Divsion standings.
The first half was all Lethbridge as they jumped out to an early 40-19 lead three minutes into the second quarter. Some key three-point shots by Pronghorn guard Quinn Van Gaalen kept Lethbridge leading at half time by a score of 45-31.
Lethbridge came out strong again at the beginning of the third quarter to hang on to their impressive lead. But, Saskatchewan began to gain some momentum toward the end of the third quarter after Harbidge hit one of his four three-point shots of the half at the buzzer to bring the Huskies deficit to 19 heading into the fourth period.
Midway through the fourth quarter the Dogs came within 10 points of the Pronghorns after Huskie forward Andrew Spagrud received a great pass from Bodnar for an easy layup. Down by three points in the final seconds of the game, Harbidge got the ball at the top of the three-point line with pressure in his face and sunk the three-point shot to tie the game at 86.
The Huskies scored 37 points in the final frame to force overtime, scoring on 11 consecutive possesions to end regulation and 17 of 20 possesions in the fourth quarter.
In overtime, the Dogs found themselves down by four after Ryan Anderson hit a jumper with 2:55 to go. But a three by fifth-year senior Rob Lovelace with 1:21 to play put the Huskies up 94-93, giving the Huskies the lead for good. Saskatchewan managed to hang on to the lead, finishing the extra period with an 11-2 run to secure the 100-95 victory.
Spagrud finished with 23 points and 13 rebounds after twisting an ankle in the first quarter. Lovelace had 22 points, shooting 8-10 from the floor for the game. Harbidge was a perfect 4-4 from beyond the arc and finished with 18 points, including 16 in the second half. Kyle Grant added 15 points, and hit a big three-ball of his own with 1:01 left in the fourth quarter to bring the Dogs within one point. Bodnar added nine points and three assists off the bench.
Anderson had a game-high 26 points to lead the Pronghorns. He also had nine boards and was 13-19 from the field. Shawn Nelson added 20 points off the bench, while the 'Horns also received 14 points each from Van Gaalen and Sephton Spence.
Despite the home squad shooting a blistering 72.0% from the floor in the second half, they were outshot by the visitors for the game. The Pronghorns outshot the Huskies 57.7% to 49.2%. The Huskies were 7-14 from downtown, including 6-6 in the second half and overtime. The 'Horns were only 4-12 from three-point land. Both teams shot a disappointing percentage from the free throw line, as the Huskies were 31-47 while the Pronghorns were 9-15.
These two teams will meet again Saturday, game time is 7 p.m.
