Huskies drop Pronghorns Saturday night
Saskatoon, Sask. - The University of Saskatchewan Huskies continued their fourth quarter success Saturday night as they defeated the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns 92-71 at the Physical Activity Complex.
Just like Friday night the Huskies dominated in the fourth quarter, only this time they were ahead 61-56 at the end of three periods instead of facing a 19-point deficit. The Huskies outscored the Pronghorns 31-15 in the fourth quarter.
Saskatchewan (13-9, 5-3 Canada West) move into second place in the Central Division standings, while Lethbridge (3-16, 0-8) remains in last place.
Alan Kadima's three-pointer at the buzzer gave the Pronghorns a 40-37 lead at the half. The 'Horns led for most of the half, and held a six-point lead at one time in the second quarter.
But in the fourth quarter the Huskies clamped down on defense, while fifth-year senior Kyle Grant led the way on offense. Grant scored 15 points in the frame, and the Huskies began the quarter on a 14-3 run. The Dogs also finished the period strong, going on a 16-4 run over the final four minutes on their way to victory.
Grant finished with a season-high 25 points, 22 in the second half, and grabbed seven rebounds. He moved into fifth place on the Huskies all-time career scoring list as he pushed his careeer total to 1878 points in 164 games, passing forward Kirk Jones (1865 points, 1983-88).
Two other Huskies cracked the 20-point mark as well. Freshman Chris Bodnar, making his first career start, had 20 points as he went 12-14 from the free throw line and 2-3 from downtown. He also dished out five assists. Junior forward Troy Gottselig came off the bench to score 20 points on 8-11 shooting from the field. He also had five steals. Rob Lovelace and Jordan Harbidge added 12 and nine points respectively. Mark Lynch also had a team-high seven boards.
Sephton Spence had 23 points to lead Lethbridge. He also collected 10 rebounds. Ryan Anderson and Shawn Nelson had 12 points apiece. Remington Stemler had a game-high 11 boards.
Both teams struggled from the floor for the game, with the Pronghorns shooting 39.2% while the Huskies shot 41.2%. The Huskies were 9-20 from downtown though, while the 'Horns were only 5-19. The Huskies were 27-35 from the charity stripe while the Pronghorns were 8-15. The Dogs held a 28-15 advantage in points off of turnovers.
The Huskies played without All-Canadian forward Andrew Spagrud, who misssed the first conference game of his career with an injury suffered on Friday night.
Saskatchewan will travel to divisional rival Calgary (16-4, 7-1 Canada West) for two games next Friday and Saturday night. Tip-off is set for 8 p.m. both nights at the Jack Simpson Gymnasium.
