Glover scores record 50 in Dogs win Breaks Byron Tokarchuk's school record in victory over Lethbridge
With 50 points, the junior from Fresno, California, toppled Byron Tokarchuk's 20-year-old school record. Tokarchuk scored 49 points in a Canada West playoff game at UBC on February 27, 1988. Glover's total ranks fifth on the Canada West all-time list for most points in a single game. Calgary's Richard Bohne leads the category with 64 and 54 points, followed by Calgary's Navie Sekon at 53 and UBC's J.D. Jackson at 51.
The Pronghorns jumped out to a quick 13-10 lead five minutes into the first quarter. Rob Cooper scored eight points to help grow the lead to 20-12 with just three minutes left. The Huskies were able to pull back in the game with six points from Glover and a jump shot by Michael Lieffers to head into the second quarter down 23-22.
Saskatchewan's Troy Gottselig gave his team the lead with a jump shot from the top of the key just 20 seconds into the second quarter. Lethbridge would never regain the lead in the game. The Pronghorns pulled to a tie three times in the second quarter - once at 34 points and again at 36 and for the last time at 39 but the Huskies were able to pull ahead each time with baskets from Glover. The Huskies led 48-42 at halftime.
The Huskies scored 33 points in the third quarter - 11 from Glover - and held a seven point lead for the majority of the frame. Pronghorn Shawn Nelson's three point shot pulled his team within two points at the seven minute mark of the quarter but it was as close as the Pronghorns could get.
Although Lethbridge outscored the Huskies 27-25 in the fourth quarter, the Huskies hung on for the 106-93 win.
Danhue Lawrence scored 35 points for the Pronghorns, followed by Cooper with 23 points. Lawrence also had six rebounds in the game.
Glover finished 8-11 from downtown, and 17-28 overall from the field. He also dished out eight assists and had six steals. Gottselig followed Glover for the Huskies with 14 points and 13 rebounds. Unsworth added 10 points and 11 boards.
The victory moves Saskatchewan (10-11, 5-6 Canada West) into sole possession of third place in the Central Division. Lethbridge (6-15, 4-6) is now in fourth place.
The two teams will meet again Monday night. Tip off is 6 p.m. at the PAC.
Game Notes: Huskie Athletics honoured men's basketball player Brennan Jarrett prior to the game. Brennan, a sophomore guard, passed away on December 22 from complications to emergency surgery. Huskie head coach Greg Jockims gave Brennan's family his No. 14 Huskie jerseys as well as a signed action shot of Brennan from the team before a moment of silence. Jarrett joined the Huskies in 2007-08. He played in 17 games before being diagnosed with testicular cancer in November 2007.
