Dogs defeat 'Horns, move into second place

Saskatoon, SK - With an 86-77 victory over the visiting University of Lethbridge Pronghorns Monday night in Saskatoon, the University of Saskatchewan Huskies earned exactly what they needed this week over their Central Division opponents - two wins.

Heading into the weekend series Lethbridge and Saskatchewan were tied for third place in the Canada West Central Division. Monday's victory combined with a 106-93 win on Sunday night gives Saskatchewan (11-11, 6-6 Canada West) a two game lead on Lethbridge (6-16, 4-8) in the standings, and moves them into second place tie with Alberta.

"This weekend was really huge for us," said Huskie head coach Greg Jockims. "A spot in the playoffs could come down to these two games."

The Huskies scored the first three points in the game and kept the lead for the remainder of the game. They built a 15-7 lead six minutes into the first quarter. Lethbridge put together a six point run all from Rob Cooper to pull within two points but the Huskies were still able to stay in front 21-16.

Saskatchewan continued to hold eight point leads throughout the rest of the first half but the Pronghorns kept making threats of a comeback pulling within two or three points. The Huskies ended the half up 38-32. The Huskies continued to remain with a large lead throughout the third quarter.

Down 80-70 with just 3:25 left in the game, Shawn Nelson and Derek Waldner led the Pronghorns to five straight points. Huskie forward Troy Gottselig answered with a three pointer to put his team back up by eight and Lethbridge couldn't continue the comeback.

Junior guard Showron Glover, who put up a school record 50 points in Sunday's win, led the Huskies with 22 points. He added six assists and three steals. Gottselig followed with 19 points and 12 rebounds.

Cooper led the Pronghorns with 28 points, while Nelson had 18. Waldner, a freshman forward, had 12 points and 12 boards.

Saskatchewan hits the road to face the University of Calgary on Friday and Saturday, while Lethbridge travels to Edmonton to meet the University of Alberta.
