The win moved the Golden Bears to 10-8 and six points ahead of the Huskies (7-11) for second place in the Canada West Central Division. Any Alberta win in the four remaining games this season will clinch second place for the Bears and first round playoff hosting duties. Both the Huskies and the Golden Bears will host the University of Fraser Valley Cascades and the Thompson River Wolfpack next weekend. The Huskies will see the Cascades Friday, followed by the Wolfpack on Saturday. Alberta has the two teams opposite nights.
Friday - Alberta 73, Saskatchewan 66
The University of Alberta Golden Bears took a two-game lead over the University of Saskatchewan Huskies in the Canada West Central Division standings with a 73-66 victory Friday night in Saskatoon at the PAC.
Entering the game Huskies knew they needed to walk out of the weekend series with the division foe with at least a split to stay in the race for second place in the division and first round playoff hosting duties. Alberta moved to 9-8 with the victory, while Saskatchewan fell to 7-10.
Deadlocked at 47 heading into the fourth quarter, Huskie Showron Glover broke the tie two minutes into the final frame. Although Alberta answered with a three point shot by Scott Leigh, Troy Gottselig and Glover put the Huskies back up by six. But it didn't last long Alberta went on a 13-2 run, taking over the lead and the game. It proved to be the turning point that handed Alberta the win. Golden Bears C.G. Morrison and Neb Aleksic forged the points hitting three three-point shots.
The Golden Bears jumped out of the gate to start the game earning a
14-2 lead in the first five minutes of the game. Saskatchewan scored eight points in the last three minutes to enter the second quarter down by 12. The Golden Bears continued to dominate at the beginning of the second quarter and at one point led by 18 points at 30-12. After Glover spun around defenders to throw in a jump shot, the Huskies crawled back scoring the next five points. They entered halftime down by seven, 37-30. They outscored Alberta 17-10 in the third quarter to get back into the game.
Canada West's leading scorer Glover led both teams with 22 points on the night, Gottselig followed with 18 points and seven rebounds. Justin VanLoo scored 13 points and brought down six rebounds for the Golden Bears, and Morrison and Aleksic each had 12 on the night.
The two teams will meet again Saturday night. Game time is 8 p.m. at the PAC on College.
