Huskies rebound with big win over Cascades

Clinch third place and playoff berth in Central Division

Saskatoon, SK - The University of Saskatchewan Huskies bounced back from a tough weekend last week with a 38-point victory Friday night over the visiting University of Fraser Valley Cascades at the Physical Activity Complex. With the 92-54 win and Lethbridge's 87-32 loss at UBC, Saskatchewan (13-16, 8-11 Canada West) clinches third place and a playoff berth in the Central Division. UFV (7-13) has already been eliminated from the playoffs in the Pacific Division.

"We needed to bounce back from a poor performance last weekend," said Huskie head coach Greg Jockims. "We are working to regain consistency in our play."

The Huskies led the entire game, and jumped out to a quick lead finding themselves up 13-4 courtesy of junior guard Showron Glover’s nine points in the run. The Huskies were able to hold the large gap until the Cascades pulled within four points at 19-15 on a Gurjote Jhaj layup. Mac Fairbairn and Nolan Brudehl helped build the Huskies lead back to nine by the end of the frame with a combined seven points. The Cascades scored 17 points in the frame - the most in any all night.

Saskatchewan continued to pressure the Cascades forcing them to turnover the ball in the. They held Fraser Valley to just nine points in the second and led 45-26 heading into half time. The Cascades couldn’t gain momentum they needed to overcome the large gap allowing the Huskies to score 47 points in the second half to their 28.

The Cascades shot just 26.9 percent overall and 25 per cent from the three-point line, while the Huskies sat at 43.1 percent and 40 percent. The Huskies dominated the glass, out rebounding their opponents 62 to 35. That's the fourth most boards in a game in school's history, and the most since 1975.

Canada West leading scorer Glover scored another 31 points in the game. The Huskies had three more players in the double digits - Troy Gottselig (16), Brudehl (12) and Fairbairn (11). Tristan Smith led the way for the Cascades netting 16, followed by Sam Freeman with 11 and Jhaj with 10.

Saskatchewan hosts the Thompson Rivers University Wolfpack Saturday night with tipoff set for 8 p.m. at the PAC. Fraser Valley travels to Edmonton to meet the University of Alberta Golden Bears. With files from Nicole Betker, University of Saskatchewan Sports Information
