Huskies dominate glass to beat TRU

Grab 60-plus rebounds for second straight game

Saskatoon, SK - The University of Saskatchewan Huskies cruised to a 103-61 victory over the Thompson Rivers University Wolfpack in their last home game of the regular season Saturday night at the Physical Activity Complex.

Saskatchewan (14-16, 9-11 Canada West) locked down third place and the final playoff position in the Canada West Central Division on Friday. TRU (8-23, 2-19) has already been eliminated from playoff contention in the Pacific Division. The Huskies will meet the University of Alberta Golden Bears in the best-of-three division semi-final in Edmonton February 13-15.

The Huskies had an eight point lead heading into the second quarter and continued to hold the gap into half time at 46-32. The Huskies came on even stronger in the second half scoring 22 points in the third and 35 in the fourth.

Once again the Huskies led their opponents in the rebound department pulling down 61 (30 offensive, 31 defensive) to the Wolfpack’s 38 (13 offensive, 25 defensive). That is the second straight game the Dogs grabbed 60-plus rebounds, as they secured 62 last night. That total ranked fourth in school history, while tonight's effort on the glass ranks sixth all-time.

Troy Gottselig and Clint Unsworth both had eight rebounds, Michael Lieffers had seven and Showron Glover, Nolan Brudehl and Mac Fairbairn all had six for the Huskies.

The Huskies shot 45.1 percent from the floor to Thompson Rivers’ 33.3 per cent.

The Dogs had 33 second chance points compared to the Wolfpack's 14, and a 33-12 advantage in points off turnovers.

Canada West leading scorer Glover scored a game high 26 points for Huskies. Gottselig had 19 for the Huskies followed by Dan Brudehl with 16. Matt Pierce was the best for the Wolfpack with Greg Stewart followed with 10.

The Huskies will travel to Lethbridge next weekend to meet the Pronghorns in the final two games of the regular season. Thompson Rivers will remain on the road to meet division opponents UBC and Victoria.
