Dogs open up season with a win
Lloydminster, AB - The University of Saskatchewan Huskies opened up their 2008-09 regular season Wednesday night in Lloydminster with a 77-64 victory over the Lakeland College Rustlers. The two teams will meet again on Friday night in Saskatoon.
"It wasn't a very pretty game, we turned the ball over a lot," said Huskie head coach Greg Jockims. "But our defensive effort and rebounding were areas that really stood out as positives. It's going to take some time for all of us to get on the same page offensively, so this isn't unexpected early in the season."
The Huskies, who return four players from last year's roster but only one starter, were led by newcomer Showron Glover. Glover, a junior guard, finished with a game-high 30 points. That is the most points ever scored by a player in their first game as a Huskie.
Mac Fairbairn added 12 points and 10 rebounds, while Dan Brudehl had 10 points for Saskatchewan (1-0). Forward Michael Lieffers had 11 rebounds as he returned to Lloydminster. Lieffers spent last season with Lakeland before transferring to Saskatchewan this season.
Ossie Hinds led Lakeland (1-3) with 15 points, while former Huskie Michael Linklater added 14.
Saskatchewan is now 5-0 all-time against Lakeland. Tip-off for Friday night's game is 7:00 pm at St. Joseph High School.
Saturday afternoon at 4:00 pm Saskatchewan will host the Medicine Hat College Rattlers. It will be the first ever meeting between the two schools.
