Dogs run away from Cougars for win

Saskatoon, SK - The Saskatchewan Huskies improved to 4-0 with a 117-77 victory over the Regina Cougars Wednesday night at the Physical Activity Complex.

Regina (1-1) trailed 67-63 with just over three minutes to play in the third quarter. But the Huskies pulled away, using their defense to score points in transition.

"It was a decent performance on our part," said Huskie head coach Greg Jockims. "But we turned the ball over 30-plus times again, and our defensive rotations let us down for a few stretches. There's a long way to go, but we played hard and good things happen when you do that."

Showron Glover led the Huskies with 31 points, seven steals and eight assists. Two of those assists came at the end of the third quarter as the Dogs closed out the frame on a 17-2 run.

Forward Troy Gottselig had 27 points on 10-14 shooting from the floor. He also had a team-high nine boards. Dan Brudehl finished with 15 points and four steals. Mac Fairbairn added 12 points and eight rebounds. Freshman Nolan Brudehl came off the bench to contribute 10 points and nine rebounds.

The Cougars were led by Kris Heshka with 17 points, 15 of which came from the free throw line. He also had a game-high 10 rebounds. Jeff Lukomski added 14 points.

Regina turned the ball over 37 times, while Saskatchewan coughed it up 31 times. Saskatchewan shot 50.6% from the floor, while Regina shot 31.7%.

The 117 points scored by the Huskies is the second most all-time in a single game. The record is 123, set in 2000 against Briercrest.

The Huskies' next action will come next week when they host the Graham Construction Shootout. They will play the Lethbridge Pronghorns (1-1) Thursday night at 8:00 PM.
