Huskies crack century mark on Bisons Will host Winnipeg Saturday night
Saskatoon, SK - The University of Saskatchewan Huskies earned their first conference win at home with a 100-79 victory over the visiting University of Manitoba Bisons Friday night in Saskatoon.
Manitoba (4-7, 3-6 Canada West) has only defeated the Huskies (8-8, 3-6) once in their last nine meetings since 2002-03. The 89-85 victory came last season in Winnipeg.
"This was a good win for us," said Huskie head coach Greg Jockims. "We hope to continue with a strong finish in the first half Saturday against Winnipeg."
The Huskies controlled most of the game watching Manitoba attack from the three-point line. The Bisons hit 10-of-20 attempts from that spot in the first half and added four more on 17 attempts in the second half. Saskatchewan hit six three-point field goals on 17 attempts.
The Huskies enjoyed a seven-point lead early in the first quarter, before Manitoba was able to sink three three-point field goals and an easy layup to take an 18-17 lead. Saskatchewan was able to pull back ahead to take a 29-25 lead into the second quarter.
With the Huskies up by six near the end of the first half, Saskatoon's Nathan Dixon hit another Bison three-point shot from the left side of the line to pull his team within three at 49-46. But the Huskies jumped back on the board with a Troy Gottselig steal sent to Showron Glover. Glover hit the easy layup to give his team a 51-46 lead into half time.
Saskatchewan's lead grew to 11 points to start the third quarter at 61-50. They added 49 points in the second half and kept a constant 20-point lead from six minutes left in the game. With three minutes left, Manitoba pulled within 16 but that's as close as they could come in the 100-79 loss.
Glover took scored a season high 34 points and seven rebounds for the Huskies. Gottselig (19 points), Nolan Brudehl (17 points) and Dan Brudehl (15 points) were also in the double digits for the Huskies. Dan Purvis-Collins scored 20 points for the Bisons, followed by Chris Pereira with 16 and Dixon with 15.
The Huskies will host the University of Winnipeg Wesmen Saturday, while the Bisons will head to Edmonton to meet the University of Alberta Golden Bears.
