Dogs blow game open in third on Wesmen

Saskatoon, SK - The University of Saskatchewan Huskies defeated the University of Winnipeg Wesmen 91-71 Saturday night at the Physical Activity Complex. The Huskies struggled in the first half but did not break as they managed to close out the game with a 20 point lead.

With the win Saskatchecwan (9-8, 4-6 Canada West) moves into a tie for third place in the Central Division With Lethbridge, one game behind Alberta. Winnipeg (2-10, 2-8) remains last in the Great Plains Division.

"We needed to win these games, they were must win games," Huskies head coach Greg Jockims said of the weekend. "The guys responded with confidence and we knew that if we played hard and executed that we would win the game and they responded with a positive effort."

The Huskies kept the game tight in the first half as they only trailed by two points heading into the locker room. Wesmen guard Nick Fother had racked up 16 points by continuously driving the lane and either scoring or dishing to open players.

But in the second half the Huskies managed to cage Fother as they tightened up on defense allowing their offense to shine. Led by junior guard Showron Glover, the Huskies put on a show as they started the third quarter with an 18-4 run. Freshman Nolan Brudehl hit two three's during that run.

The Huskies continued to find success in the fourth quarter as they worked the ball around the court, going on a 17-4 run to open the quarter.. Mac Fairbairn passed cross court to Troy Gottselig who made a nice pass down low to Lane Manson for an easy bucket. The Wesmen kept working the ball around but couldn’t hit the clutch shot and allowed the Huskies to run away with it.

Leading the scoring for the Wesmen was Lother who had 20 points followed by Peter Lomuro with 16.

The Huskies were led by Nolan Brudehl who had career-highs of 27 points and 13 rebounds. Glover added 24 points and seven assists. Troy Gottselig had 16 points and 11 rebounds.

The Huskies next action will be in Winnipeg at the Wesmen Classic, December 28-30.
