Your Campus

When you first arrive on the University of Saskatchewan campus you will find yourself in a place of inspiration and beauty, widely renowned for its striking collegiate gothic architecture. With traditional greystone buildings, majestic elm trees and a magnificent river view, the University of Saskatchewan is well known as one of Canada's most beautiful campuses.

The campus is expanding - new facilities at the U of S include:

- a sixth floor to the College of Agriculture building, increasing laboratory space for research.
- a new wing for the Chemical Engineering building was completed in Spring 2002.
- the new wing of the College of Commerce - the PCS Centre - was funded by the Potash Corporation of Saskatchewan. All rooms have computers connected to the Campus Network, a data video projector, VCR and amplified sound system.
- the new College of Kinesiology Physical Activity Complex will includes a triple-gym facility, a state-of-the-art fitness centre, a dance studio, squash and racquetball courts, a climbing wall and world-class teaching facilities.
- a four-storey addition to the chemistry facility. The Spinks Addition is named in honour of the late J.W.T. Spinks, president of the U of S from 1959-1974. Adjoining the Thorvaldson Building, this facility will house chemistry and computer science and will feature research and instructional laboratories.

The University of Saskatchewan is home to the Canadian Light Source - the only national facility for synchrotron light research and the fourth most powerful in the world! Scientists from around the globe will be conducting research at the U of S in areas such as biotechnology, pharmaceuticals and medical imaging. The stadium-sized $173.5 million project is Canada's largest scientific research project in more than 30 years.

As a U of S student you will feel welcomed by the campus community - friendly students, approachable professors and helpful staff. Attend Orientation and get a jump-start on campus life. This two-day event will help familiarize you and your parents with the campus and its services, providing the necessary skills for success at the U of S!

Friendly, clean and ethnically diverse - Saskatoon is one of the most desirable cities in Canada to live. This city of approximately 230,000 residents has one of the lowest costs of living in North America, numerous parks, extensive riverbank recreational trails and all the conveniences of a larger city.

Your Life

No matter what your interests are, the University of Saskatchewan has a club for you! Each year U of S students participate in over 100 clubs and student societies. From the U of S Alpine Ski & Snow Board Club to the Agriculture Students' Association, to Women & Law and the U of S Ball Room Dancing Club - there is something for everyone at the University of Saskatchewan!

Students are elected to and apply for various positions in student government at the University and college level. The University of Saskatchewan Students' Union (USSU) is a dynamic and progressive organization committed to meeting the academic and non-academic needs of students through advocacy and other services. Once enrolled at the U of S, all undergraduate students become members of the USSU.

If you are looking to participate in sports for fun, sign up for an intramural sports team. From co-ed volleyball to inner tube water polo, Campus Recreation at the University of Saskatchewan offers one of the largest intramural programs in Canada!

As a U of S student you will also have access to numerous recreational facilities on campus including a fitness centre, swimming pools, a track facility, baseball and soccer fields, tennis and squash courts, skating and curling rinks, gymnasiums, a climbing wall and several kilometres of bicycle, jogging and walking trails.

There are many special events held on campus throughout the year. Welcome Week activities, cabarets, noon-hour shows and large-scale performances and presentations by internationally known celebrities just to name a few. Join a choir, visit one of the many museums and galleries, check out the stars from the observatory, take in live theatre productions, or catch a basketball, volleyball or hockey game. Whatever your interests are - it's all here.

Pride in Your School

The University of Saskatchewan is a global leader in both teaching and research. As a student you will be proud of the many accomplishments of fellow students, professors and alumni. Our students have a strong tradition of success at regional, national and international academic competitions:

- Mathematics students won a meritorious designation in the 2000 International Mathematics Contest in Modeling - the only Canadian university to earn the designation placing in the top 25 teams of the 154 teams participating worldwide.
- In 2002, Engineering students placed first in both the Entrepreneurial Design and Extemporaneous Debate competitions at the 18th annual Canadian Engineering Competition. Approximately 200 top students represented universities from across the country.
- Law students have won distinctions and prizes at moot court competitions every year for the last decade. In the spring of 2002, U of S Law students were members of the Western Canada Moot Court Team that placed second in regional and national competitions. Two students from the College of Law received national honours, one as best oralist and the other for best cross-examination.
- In 2002, U of S Commerce students won the International Undergraduate Student Business Plan Competition held in Lincoln, Nebraska and the Queen's Entrepreneurs' Competition at Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario for their idea to manufacture and sell replicated and authentic collectible 1970s hockey jerseys and accompanying display cases online.
- For the past eight years, Nutrition students have been selected to take part in summer internship in food service management at major universities across the United States, including the Universities of California, Wisconsin, Connecticut, Oklahoma State and Bringham Young.
- First-year dental students at the University have performed above the national average in the National Dental Examination Board exams for three of the last four years.
- For the past five years 91% of U of S graduating medical students have been offered their first choice of specialty in residency training programs in Canadian universities.
- Procter and Gamble recruits more graduates for employment from the U of S than from any other English-speaking university in Canada.

Research, scholarship and creative activity at the University of Saskatchewan take place in more than 100 campus buildings, in a related 30-hectare research park (Innovation Place), at an on-campus University Farm and at three major university-owned farms off campus and a number of experimental plots.

A Program for You

If there is a program that interests you, chances are the University of Saskatchewan offers it! With over 100 areas of study, there are few universities in Canada that offer the choice of programs available at the U of S.

The University of Saskatchewan also has an extensive offering of graduate programs for you to consider after completing your Bachelor's degree. Your Huskies

The University of Saskatchewan Huskies are among the most competitive in Canada West and Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS), consistently ranked in the top 10. Each year, several teams qualify for Canada West playoffs and many advance to the CIS National Championships.

Every year, a complement of athletes are recognized for their outstanding athletic achievements and are named Canada West All-Stars, with many named as CIS All- Canadians. Some Huskie athletes win Canada West and CIS Major Awards. In recent years, athletes have been named Canada West and CIS Rookies of the Year, Player of the Year and Athlete of the Year.

Coaching at the University of Saskatchewan is first-rate. A veteran staff of seven full time and five honorarium coaches bring with them years of experience, along with a dedicated group of assistant coaches, many of whom are former Huskies themselves. Coaches, like athletes, have been honoured as Canada West and CIS Coach's of the Year on several occasions.

Each year more than 350 students take on the challenge of balancing academics with elite level varsity athletics, student trainers, team managers and game day staff. Huskie Athletics offers 15 interuniversity sports. Home of the Huskies, the University of Saskatchewan has a long tradition of athletic excellence. As a U of S student, you are admitted free of charge to all Huskie regular season home games. At the U of S we take pride in our Huskies, so come out and cheer them on!

Choosing the U of S

- The University of Saskatchewan is the only university in Canada to offer all of the health science programs: Dentistry, Kinesiology, Medicine, Nursing, Nutrition & Dietetics, Pharmacy, Physical Therapy and Veterinary Medicine.
- The College of Agriculture has gained an international reputation for being on the cutting-edge of agricultural biotechnology.
- The College of Engineering is ranked as one of the top engineering programs in North America.
- The College of Commerce is classified as a tier-one college, with graduates selected first by top international companies.
- Arts & Science, the largest college at the U of S, offers more than 40 programs, ranging from business economics and computer science to international studies and studio art.

What makes the U of S stand out from other Canadian universities?

Established in 1907, the University of Saskatchewan offers 58 degrees, diplomas, and certificates in over 100 areas and disciplines. Our enrolment of 20,000 students includes 1,000 international students from 75 countries around the world.

Tuition rates at the University of Saskatchewan are competitive within Canada and the cost of living in Saskatoon is very reasonable. Undergraduate students pay approximately $9,600 Cdn tuition for two terms of study, and $7,800 Cdn for fees, books, accommodation, food, personal needs and local transportation costs.

Safe, clean and ethnically diverse - Saskatoon is one of the most desirable cities in Canada in which to live. This city of approximately 230,000 has one of the lowest costs of living in North America yet offers all the conveniences of larger centres.

The University of Saskatchewan is the only Canadian university offering all five health sciences and a teaching hospital on the same campus. This allows us to offer very strong programming in related science areas - anatomy, biochemistry, microbiology and physiology.

The College of Engineering offers one of the top ranked Engineering programs in North America (The Gorman Report). Students can choose from one of eight different specializations and have the option to participate in the Engineering Professional Internship Program, which allows for 8-, 12-, or 16-month work terms in industry.

The College of Arts and Science offers a number of unique interdisciplinary programs, which allow students the freedom to study in areas that cross traditional academic boundaries. Food science, international studies, palaeobiology and public administration are popular interdisciplinary options. The College also offers work experience programs in computer science, geography, land use & environmental studies, and regional & urban development.

Our College of Agriculture has a global reputation for being on the cutting edge of agricultural technology - one of the advantages of being located in the agricultural heartland of Canada! The College offers an optional co-operative education program, which provides students with up to four supervised terms of paid employment in their field of study.
