Nathan Schellenberg

Assistant Coach
5th Year
Regina, SK

Nathan Schellenberg is in his fifth season as an assistant with the Huskies. He joined the Huskies coaching staff in March of 2002. His connections to the Huskies go back to the mid-90's when he was a player. Schellenberg also started for head coach Greg Jockims on the 1993 Saskatchewan Juvenile (17 & Under) Provincial team. Schellenberg works primarily with the Huskie forwards. In addition to his on-floor work with the players, his coaching responsibilites include recruiting, opponent scouting and coaching at the Huskies summer basketball camps. He is also responsible for designing and maintaining the Huskies team website that was launched in January 2003.

During the summer of 2003, Schellenberg became head coach of the 17 & Under Junior Huskies Club team. Since becoming head coach, the team has compiled an impressive 65-22 overall record over the last four years. In that time the Jr. Huskies have won five tournaments and appeared in the final of six others. So far fifteen players from the program have gone on to play post-secondary basketball in that time period.

The team finished that first summer schedule with a 16-5 overall record. In August of that same year, Schellenberg spent a week coaching at the University of Missouri basketball camp in Columbia, Missouri.

In 2004 the team finished with an 18-6 overall record, hi-lited by a fifth place finish in their division at the Reebok Big Time tournament in Las Vegas, the best placing ever by a Canadian team. The Jr. Huskies had a 4-3 record in Vegas, defeating teams from Los Angeles, Northern California, Michigan and Houston before losing their quarter-final game by one point to the Arkansas Hawks.

Prior to joining the Dogs, Schellenberg spent three years coaching with the junior boys team at his alma mater, Luther College High School in Regina. After going through a tough first season, the Lions saw much more success the next two seasons winning numerous tournaments. He left the team as one of the top three ranked teams in the city. Before coaching at Luther, where he was also Assistant Dean in the boys dorm, he spent the 1999 season as the head coach at Ruth Pawson Elementary in Regina. He also spent four years (1999-2002) as a coach in Basketball Saskatchewan Inc.'s spring programs.

Schellenberg played his high school basketball at Luther in Regina. He played three years on the senior team for former Huskie player Paul Humbert, winning three West Division titles. The Lions were crowned city champions in 1992, when they also finished second in the Provincial Championships. In 1993 they were city-finalists. As a senior he was named a team captain and MVP, when he averaged a team-high 20.6 ppg along with 7.0 rpg and 6.8 apg. Schellenberg was an RIBL West Division All-Star as a senior.

An outstanding football player as well, Schellenberg once scored six touchdowns in a playoff game. He was a two-time city All-Star receiver in football, helping the Lions win the 1992 City and Provincial 3A Championships. After graduating in 1994, he decided to play football at Idaho State University. After redshirting at ISU, he transferred to Saskatchewan in the summer of 1995 because of a chance to play both football and basketball for the Huskies. Schellenberg joined the basketball team immediately after the 1995 football season was over, earning a spot in the forward rotation during the second half of the season. Deciding not to play basketball in order to concentrate on training for football the next year, he earned a ring as the Huskies won the 1996 National Championship.

Schellenberg, who was born in Regina, is 30 years old and is working towards finishing his Bachelor's degree. A huge Detroit Lions fan for the past fifteen years, he also enjoys reading the latest books from John Feinstein as well as playing Playstation 2 video games when he finds the time.
